You think Butch would request a chat with CPF to talk about attacking Chavis' defense? Would Phil do it and would it help? Seems like it'd be advantageous for us.

Well Fulmer's gonzo supporters on here claim he loves UT to his soul, so he better.

You think that's just a "claim," something debatable?

But I would expect that Chief's D's have evolved and be tailored to different personnel, so that film study of his Aggie teams would tell us more than recollections of when he coached for us almost a decade ago.

I'm not sure how you debate what's in one's soul, but Fulmer was also too loyal to his staff. So what would he do? Help out the program that he loves or protect a former member of his staff?

That's what I was thinking. Not necessarily "what would chavis do if we ____." But more about what he likes to do on 3rd and long, 3-5 WR sets, etc. I totally believe it would be smart to check with CPF. If he loves UT like I believe he does, surely he can recognize a team of destiny like team 120 ala 98.

I misread your original post. We're on the Same page.

Our offense is perfect against a Chavis led defense. We are in 3rd and long a lot. We should have no problems sustaining drives.

So will we see 3rd an Chavis. Soft corners 8 to 10 yards off the L.o.s I'd like to see some quick slants to kamara an let kamara be kamara

South Carolina scored vs Texas A&M on the first play of the game with an outside run. Made me instantly think Kamara could have a big day if he gets the edge.

Phil Fulmer has too much respect for Chavis and Jones has too much respect for the game, the coaches, and Tennessee to ask.

I'm actually a little offended by the question. Fulmer is not like what you think of now when you think of a college football coach. Not that it would help anyway, they have access to all the film in the world.

The best person to "red team" the TAM defense would be Shoop IMO. He's already considered one of the brightest minds in the college game right now and if Jones is worth his salt he's already got him and Debord looking over both the offense and defense to see what chinks are in the armor.

Yep watch their DB's play 15 yards off the ball especially on third and....you know.
Lots of bodies lunging at the ball carrier but not wrapping up.

Yea he was/is terrible. That's why he is one of the most respected in the country. The DC of 3 big time programs. The same people who complain about punting on 4th down are the same who complain about prevent defense. Guess what it works the vast majority of the time. If it didn't do you think coaches would use it?

Does anyone remember when Tommy West was HC at Memphis? Deangelo Williams had a streak of 100 yards rushing starts in a row, he was banged up and said he couldn't start but he could play, West said if you can't start then you can't play. We ended up wining a very close game that day.

I say we play it close to the vest, no need to make Chief look bad, and then call him out like UCLA did, keep it a low scoring defensive game. Of course get the win, just take it easy on a VFL.

6-0 here we come. Hand over the belt while you're at it, we'll take that back to Knoxville.

Go Vols!

Chief is a great coach regardless what the "3rd and Chavis" crew says. We had a top tier defense several years when pre-season reports said we would struggle on defense. This game will be decided by which team executes and avoids mistakes. We just need to start quicker the next two games or some of Volnation may lose their minds! O-line play and DB play will be critical for our success!

GO VOLS!!!

I think Chief calls the dime package the Mustang. What was that crazy alignment called with everybody jumping around, including the DL?

Boy we sure did win a lot of games and had some pretty good defenses when Chavis was here.

LSU was always noted as having top notch defenses. Pretty much shut down Manziel for 2 years when basically nobody else could. Its really sad that some of you keep up the 3rd and Chavis crap. He must really suck because LSU had him for awhile and their defense was very good. Now TAMU defense is good. But yeah 3rd and Chavis...

Good post. You have to wonder how some of these people who cut on coaches like Fulmer and Chavis can call themselves fans. I would have killed to have Chavis here in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Name any coach from any team in the last 30 years that hasn't been cut on. Fulmer and Chavis were losing a lot of games at the end... especially to top teams. Plus the success with recruiting was regressing.
