Listening to local radio guys (with some sense), there is a lot of criticism of the scheduling of Miami v. FSU as game one, on a Monday night. The two criticisms that were the most valid to me are: 1. there is no build-up to the game, no teams coming in at 5-0, no opportunity to talk about trends in the opposing team, things to watch, etc. Sort of disappointing for the fans. 2. with the game on a Monday, the teams have a very unattratcive choice about their bye week. They can go ahead and play again five days later and keep the bye for later in their schedule, or they can take it right away, forcing them to go 11 games in a row with no break.

I think both are valid points.

This year, UT starts off the season with a decent UAB team. A game you ought to win easily, but how many times does a season get trashed because your team is looking down the road and an opponent has its best game of the season and sneaks up on you? Happens every year.

Look at Florida. I admit it. Normally we start off with the Blind Teachers' College of Elm Street (Junior Varsity). But this year we take on a Wyoming team that has some votes in the preseason polls. I'd put Wyoming on par with a UAB.

Now, niether UAB or Wyoming equals an FSU or a Miami, but is there some sense to Spurrier's old plan of take on the patsies early to build confidence and basically scrimmage for execution later on down the line?

(Could give a crap about F$U or Miami State Penitentiary). . . .BUT:

I totally agree. A lot of people say some of the same things about the UT/UF series. The year it got bumped to the end of the schedule certainly changed the dynamics of the rivalry.

About the only positive I can come up with is that you are less likely to have as many injuries early in the year, but that shouldn't really affect one team more than the other -- more of a craps shoot as to who's more banged up, unless one team is significantly "deeper" than the other.

I'd love for UT to flip-flop a couple of teams. . . .our season ends in October most years, for all purposes, unless we make it to Hot-lanta. Look at Fulmer's record in November. And, who's our big Thanksgiving rival? Yep: Kentucky or Vanderbilt. Please. Call me when basketball season arrives. The end of the year is almost a "letdown" when you've already played Alabama, Florida, and Georgia so early. Truly, I wonder if that doesn't impact our performance in the SECCG or bowl games, at times.

Yep, and that is why I think Florida is lucky to always have FSU in November, right around T-giving, year in and year out.

Kiddiedoc,

I seem to rembember a few vols having some legal troubles over the last couple of years. A few DUI's, domestic disturbance cases, fights, etc....Sounds like my Canes under Dennis Erickson....

As far as the game goes. I don't agree with the schedule at all, but you have to be ready to play whether it's week one or week nine.

Yes!

Give me Vanderbilt and Kentucky in Septempber or early october and Georgia and Florida in November?

What, are you nuts?

November has usually been the breeze in our sails.

I'm not sure it would be good for the program to have all of the heavy hitters lumped near the end.

I would like it if we could plug Vandy in between Florida and LSU this year.

And think of the great traditions of the year ending games against Vandy and Kentucky. PlllluuuuuCcccccKkkkkkkK! (That was my tongue being removed from my cheek)

Why don't we just forego the first 5 weeks of the season and schedule ALL our games the last 5-6 weeks. We could play a Thursday Night Game and a Saturday game, heck we could play a couple double headers while we're at it.

If we could assure our previous November results that might be a good idea. :p

Just looking at injuries alone, I would have to say that I like UF and others towards the beginning of the year. If we had to play the tough games later on in the schedule, we probably wouldn't have many players left if the trend keeps going like it has been.
