Anyone else been watching this? The first week was pretty good....time for the 2nd string QB

Another side note about the new tv shows, has anyone caught The Class? Great new show also and the guy that plays the ex-NFL player on there has a UT helmet in his trophy case in the show. :)

After the way the movie absolutely butchered the book, I doubt I will ever sit down to watch the TV Show.

The TV show is absolutuly aweful. Terrible acting, so over the top. Its so dumb. Its really obvious the writers dont know anything about football. It was so corny, first episode star QB breaks his neck. Didnt see that coming. I even thought play makers was alright but this show insults the sport.

I watched about 5 minutes of a locker room scene and turned it off. It is full of stereotypes, and obviously written by someone that has never been in a locker room.

I watched the first episode, but I didn't really like it. With endorsement deals for the coach, "booster" pressures, and the general atmosphere, the whole thing looks like it would be better set on a college campus than in a small highschool town (there was even a comment about Sports Illustrated rating them the #1 team in Texas. Since when does SI rate Texas highschool sports?) Something about it just didn't ring true to me.

Imagine the movie "The Program" set in Piddlydunk West Texas, and you've got a pretty good image of my take on the show. It just didn't work.

You should probably read the book, "Friday Night Lights" and then actually make a trip out to the Lee-Permian game one fall (feel free to substitute Coronado-Lubbock High matchup or Tascosa-Amarillo.)

The coaches for Odessa-Permian and Midland Lee probably face as much, if not more, pressure to perform than most D1 football coaches. They have local endorsement deals and the big rivalry games will draw upwards of 20,000 fans.

I'm not knocking Texas HS football, and in fact am pretty familiar with the Midland-Odessa area (family ties to Pecos, home of cantalopes and a river with no water in it.)

I'm just saying that they seem to have taken a college story line and dropped it into highschool football.

Did you know any chicks like the blond...er...friendly girl when you were in the 11th grade? Sadly, I did not. That was a few years down the road.

EDIT: and I actually kind of liked the movie in a "that wasn't a complete waste of 2 hours" sort of way.

Besides butchering the book, which was more of a comment on society than an introspective look at Texas HS football, I could not stand how the movie made the players look like they had been in a knife fight after every practice and every game.

There's a mouthful. I went to college in Abilene for 2 years. One of my hanging buddies was from O-P. Man, those podunk, rural West Texas towns only have local HS football, and it is all going down on Friday nights. Nothing is left on the field. O-P & Midland Lee has got to be one of the biggigest rivalries of all time, anywhere, anything.

The O-P coach that was depicted in the movie wasn't happy with his portrayal. He, being conservative in religion, was offended.

I like the show. I would have loved to play HS Football in Texas. I am guessing there is not too much like it.
