A Pac-10 defense...middle-tier one, mind you....keeps the Vols off the scoreboard in the most critical moment of the game. This 5 play sequence kinda sums up the entire slow decline in UT football, both results and style of play, since 2001.

Makes you ask 2 questions. What happened there? What has happened?

Just run it in. It's frickin Cal, for goodness sakes. Cal.:cray:

Yeah, that sequence probably gave me the most heartburn of the entire game... well, maybe with the exception of the punt return. :banghead2:

Like you said, it started with him getting caught inside the 5. Tennessee guys usually don't get caught from behind in the open field - we did this time because Foster doens't have game breaking speed, he's no Coker in terms of speed.

But no big deal we figure, we've concentrated on becoming more physical and running the football between the tackles. We've got 4 tries to show the world we're back to smash mouth football.

The fact that we couldn't ram it down their throat made me ill.

Perhaps we should give Foster some blinders.

Him looking back at the defender and getting tackled at the 5 was one of the most frustrating plays in the last couple of years. Right up there w/ his Penn State fumble.

Other than that, he was solid.

Yeah, Foster played pretty well, all in all. The loss was certainly no fault of his. He just wasn't blessed with outstanding speed.

What makes me ill is that we'll never know. I would be willing to wager a fair amount on us being able to convert the TD with 3 (or 4) conservative runs. Crap, run the QB sneak 3 times.

Of course, if Ainge makes a good throw, we aren't having this discussion.

True, I think the upsetting thing boils down to what we were fed in the offseason, that we were going to get back to power football.

Power football pounds it in from inside the 5 on first down.
