Former Vols speak out

I remember back in the 90's we got manhandled by Nebraska so we stole their strength and conditioning coach. The next season we looked better and played with more intensity, articles came out all the time about the size of our players and how they performed better. I think they even published a diet plan? Why did we go away from that?

This is a comprehensive critique of some of the things that are wrong with our program....it comes down to the fact that TN football is not what it used to be...the fault lies with the head coach and he should have realized it before now...it starts with the basics and learning from our mistakes, not continuing to make the same bad plays over and over. I hope that tomorrow we will see some of the old 'fire in the bellies' of our players and our coaching staff. GO VOLS!

When this coaching staff finally coaches its last down, there will be articles like this coming out of the wazoo.

WOw...that piece belongs in the national enquirer...complete with unnamed sources and everything.
That certainly gives the article some characteristics of a "hack" piece. However, I have little doubt that JP actually spoke to former players. If he was just sitting in his office making the stuff up, then it would belong in the Enquirer. The problem with the Equirer conclusion is that most of the information is pretty believable.

I believe every word, esp the strength & conditioning part. How does that escape Phil's attention? games are won and lost in the weight room. If you wonder why we cant run the ball look no further.

That is quite possibly the biggest HACK article I have ever read. I agree with gh eric...show me some names. If everyone is so concerned about the state of the program, then why do you hide behind a reporter, or have Pennington state that you are a player from "the Peyton Manning" era. WHat crap.

If the article is to have some sort of impact by using "former Players" as critics, then deliver some meat, not just what every "joe blow pissed off at Fulmer" can figure out for themselves.

He can't drop names. People wouldn't open up to reporters if they couldn't speak anonymously.

if a former player was openly critical of Fulmer, how long do you thing he would continue to be welcome in the weight room, etc? I think looking at where our our 2 former s&c coaches are is very, very telling.

“Coach Fulmer is a good coach,” said a Vol from the 2000s. “But in the real world people are held accountable for their work. So it’s fair for people to ask questions.”

If its run like big business then this statement rings true.

I live in Knoxville and read/hear Pennington a lot. I think he has honestly heard/interviewed all of these guys. I think some valid points are raised, and JP even said on radio just now, that he doesn't know if these 9 guys represent the majority.

Pennington: Former players have concerns : Columns : GoVolsXtra.com

An interesting read because I have yet to see anything from the former players of the Fulmer era. Until now.

And they're asking the same question we have been.

Great article to read, thanks for posting it. These guys are more knowledgeable then 99% of the fans out there, and I think they have great observations. Particularly the conditioning aspect of the program, and problems not be corrected for several games.

If your gonna say something, then man the HELL up and admit it. This sounds like some high school drama crap. If you don't want to be implicated later with a statement, which WILL happen, then shut the HELL up. This is a country of "Free Speech", and if anyones got a problem with it tell them to shove it. What, are they scared or something to admit it. Once again articles like this one prove to me that some people like to hide behind curtains and yet want their words to be in the spotlight. :finger3:

Do you think Pennington went and made up this entire story without talking to any former players? I doubt that.

A lot of what they are saying about the intensity lacking at practice and in the weight room has been brought up before. Even Cutcliffe brought it up when he took over. Ainge mentioned the difference.

Even if most of its true, why not man the hell up and let people know who you are and what your problem with things are?? Its the chicken way out, and that says a lot about the ex-players mentioning it.
