Former UT coach thinks Trey Smith will have immediate impact

He really seems like a good kid. That's a lot a pressure for a young man, I hope he can live up to the hype.

Tuttle has been good but really set back by injuries. Richmond seems poised. Kongbo? We'll find out this year if he's good or just mediocre. Mckenzie has been a disappointment. Smith is going to be a stud.

Richmond has had a tremendous off-season. He also really came on late in the season last year. I think we will eventually see Richmond and Smith lock down the tackle spots at some point this season.

Hall has potential but he was very inconsistent last year and cant seem to stay healthy.

My two favorite interior guys are Boulware and Jones.

So far our big 5 star linemen have disappointed 😔 I know there have been injuries & all but McK, Tuttle, Richmond & Kongbo haven't lived up to their hype. Maybe Smith will!

I would strongly disagree about Tuttle. And if I remember correctly he was downgraded to a four star before coming to UT. When he's healthy he's played really really well ...

K-Mac was Butch's only 247 5* recruit before Smith. That being said everyone you mentioned were top 100 recruits. Tuttle has shown the most promise but an intentional injury had slowed him. Kongbo is built to be a DE and played out of position most of last year. K-Mac was really messed up by missing his senior year and coming in out of shape then then injury. Richmond was a RT in HS, learning a new position isn't easy but it does seem like he didn't take full advantage of his redshirt year.

When I think of Charles McRae, "flexible" is not the word that comes to mind.

Anyone remember him playing Nose Guard? At 6' 8", that was a hoot.

Ended up becoming a decent offensive tackle. Peaked later in the NFL.

McRae was much better than decent. I remember that line well, watched them come back against Virginia in the 1990 sugar bowl that year. That was a very good offensive line, McRae and Davis were the headliners. GBO!!!!

Awesome. Now, can we put him somewhere and let him stay there for 3 years along with his teammates? A UT offensive line that does not shuffle around all season is about as rare as Sasquatch.

Check the Sasquatch thread in the pub. They exist.....

I like the "nastiness" part.. As much as everybody hated the cheap shot onTuttle by the uga olineman, it is Exactly what you need in your O and D lines.. Its why you didn't hear to much hell raised about it by the coaches... Vols need nasty!!

There is "nasty" aggressive taking your man on head to head between the whistles.

Then there is cowardly slinking dog giving someone a dirty injurious shot from behind.

Totally separate things.

I agree that Hall's injury issues have limited his production. But he is not inconsistent. When he stepped in at RT, he performed well. In fact, teaming with Wiesman helped the right side become the strength of the OL. I agree that there were a couple of times he struggled when he had to play with an injury. But that is the exception not the rule.
I'm convinced that we will see Smith, Richmond, and Hall playing together most of the time. When you throw in Robertson and a healthy Thomas, that is potentially the best line I can remember for a loooong time. With Jones and Boulware as interchangeable parts, this line is exciting. Can't wait to see them. Let's hope they stay healthy.

Once he moved over to OT he was better than decent....All-SEC and 1st round NFL draft pick. Never quite understood them trying a 6'7 guy at NG/DT.

I met him before a game as a kid. He had his jersey and pads off at warmups, amd took his t shirt off for some reason. He had 6 pack abs. At 295 lbs if i remember correctly. I was a WWF fan then, bc i was about 10 years old...he was built like lex luger or sting. No bodyfat to speak of...at about 300 lbs. Was extremely nice to me and my pappaw and signed my hat. One of my alltime favorites. God doesnt make too many folks at 300 lbs without bodyfat. OUR lines back then were insane. 80% starters played in the NfL.

Hard to believe Smith won't even turn 18 until next month.

[Mark] Bradley should know. He coached or was on the UT staff when the Vols had such O-line stars as Antone Davis, Charles McRae and Kevin Mays. Bradley sees some of Smith in each of them. Bradley said Smith has the “terrific balance’’ of Davis, the “incredible flexibility’’ of McRae and the “nastiness’’ of Mays. “Trey has the combination of a lot of the things those guys had in one package,’’ Bradley said.

Bradley watched UT’s spring game and came away with the impression that Smith was UT’s best offensive lineman, although Brett Kendrick and Chance Hall did not play. Smith started at right guard after starting at right tackle much of the spring. “I think eventually over his career he will be a left tackle’’ Bradley said. “But he could also be an elite level guard. He could play at least four positions, and if they wanted to work him at center, he could probably play all five positions.’’
