Former Sooners QB Jason White offers strong comments on Josh Heupel's time at Oklahoma and Heupel's exit from Norman

"I don't ever take credit for that, I always give the credit to Heup," said White. "You know, Josh Heupel, when I got here, it was his first year here as well -- he was a transfer, so it was his first year. But I always noticed that he would go do these extra workouts after our workouts. And I asked him one day, 'hey, what are you doing with all of this?' And he's like 'oh, it's all footwork drills and stuff like that'. And I said 'do you mind if I join you?' And he's like 'well, I'll make you a deal, if you join me, the first time you miss, that's it, don't come back'. And I was like 'ok, well you're not a coach, but ok'. So I ended up joining him and I started doing it and it just kind of snowballed from there. Because after that, Paul Thompson started joining me. And then after that, Sam Bradford was joining Paul Thompson. So it just kind of snowballed that everyone -- I don't know if they still do it or not.

"But that was just, Josh kind of started it for everybody. Just started that work ethic in the quarterback room. And then spending the time in the film room, Josh spent so much time in the film room studying. And he actually helped me like 'hey, this is what you need to look for when you're studying'. Just to be a part of that group of quarterbacks that came through, it's truly an honor."

(Show host and former Oklahoma fullback Joe Castiglione Jr noted that Sooners quarterbacks still do those extra footwork drills to this day.)

In 2000 OU’s NC Championship year Heupel played beat up the second half of the season. OU was running the Air Raid and KSU chose to blitz nonstop all day. He hurt his elbow. The guy is a battler. The day of the FSU National Championship his elbow was twice its normal size. The OC Chuck Long worked with him with loosening it up and the swelling went down. But his between the ears as a QB is just like your Peyton Manning. He changed routes with his receivers at the LOS verbally or with signals all game. I’d guess no QB in history got more out of his athletic ability than Josh Heupel.

Another funny tale is Stoops in discussing Mike Leach after his death with Mark Mangino. They were on a podcast it’s pretty good. Stoops talks of the first week he hears down the hall a loud argument so loud he heard it with his door closed. He said good grief it’s our first week. Mangino and Leach were about to kill each other. Mangino a great play designer and run schemer was making suggestions for running plays. Leach said we have 5 running plays that’s it. Mangino said here’s a few I think will work. Leach said you can give me all the running play suggestions you want but I will never use them. We have 5 running plays. Then they talked how Heupel came off the field in discussion with Leach early in their first season in 1999. He said he was reading the coverages and…. Leach stopped him and said if you ever tell me you were reading the coverages I’ll (censored). The Air Raid is not about coverages but just do the reads on your receiver progression. Caleb Williams made Riley bring in an NFL guy to help him with reading coverages if he was coming to USC. The Air Raid is all about the play no matter the coverage.

We all got furious with Riley his last year because teams were defending all the spreads with 2 deep safeties and forcing a run or short passes. He didn’t adjust.
