For your edge-u-macation...the Sunshine Pumper

Doesn't leave much to post in does it.

The board would be reduced to a few dozen eligible posters a day (which would be a good thing in a way) if it was the old days.
I think the ying/yang between the pumper/nega groups has become the lifesblood of just about every Vol forum on the web. A homerun hire would've brought everyone together, but that didn't happen. A Kiffenesque recruiting haul including 3-4 more of the "big 6" prospects that went elsewhere probably would've done it, but that didn't happen either. Next chance at fan unity will be to exceed all reasonable expectations, and maybe some unreasonable ones as well, on the field this year. Sooner or later, under CBJ or someone else, we will get back and everyone will be on the same page again. Until then, it doesn't look like the infighting will stop.

I think it's tricky to equate sports with life or business. One is a pasttime in which in my view it's absolutely permissible to indulge in temporary delusions, fantasies, and sensational expectations for the sheer joy of the experience especially when shared with those you love. It's akin to reckless abandon. In life and business or education a little bit of wisdom and discernment is actually required in order to avert abject failure. As fans we really don't have all that much impact on the outcome of most games or seasons. If we did a lot of us would get cut because face it there are a lot of 2 star fans on this board. Now to be a 5 star fan you HAVE to be the elite of the elite in "sunshine pumping". jmo.

I always, regardless of the circumstances, the roster, the coaches, whatever, go into the new season and new game expecting the vols to kick everybody's butt. So what if I'm disappointed every now and again. It was fun while it lasted and in truth it's really about the only fun we as fans have been able to have over the past few seasons. I would much rather suffer the momentary post game disappointmet than to give up all joy in the sport. If we have no hope, real or imagined, what's the point? Dreading the future when you have little to no leverage to change things is not in my view very healthy; nor is it all that much fun.

I think Freak ought to have summer camps where we as fans could show off our sunshine pumping abilities and then we could come away with star ratings. That might just be what we need as a fanbase to get us to the point where we actually deserve the recognition as the best fanbase in all of America.

If you want to know the difference between a sunshine pumper, a.k.a. 5-star fan, and a 2 star fan, follow the money. The two star fan is oftentimes much better at betting on the games so therein is his reward. He sells out his team support for money.

excellent post!

I still have a level of interest in the Vols or i wouldn't log on here anymore.. My interest has waned the last few years, that's a fact.. I want to see them do well, but i don't let it consume me like when i was younger..

Now if we were winning would my attitude toward it be different? Maybe.. I wish we were in the position to find out..

Honestly football in general has taken a back seat to a few other interests i have now. I'm not sure it would be much different if we were winning.. All part of getting older i guess..That's just were i'm at in my life..:salute:

I hope Butch is the answer.. I won't be all in until he proves it on the field though, nothing he does outside of that really matters IMO..

I understand. I'm an old fart myself, but the orange flame that burns fiercely within me will only diminish when the last spark of my life is extinguished.

As a somewhat new member and poster here, I thought I'd throw a couple cents worth of my humble opinion in this fray. First; I am a member of several scuba forums and there are several trainwrecks/meltdowns on those forums regarding philoshophies, techniques, equipment configurations, etc. In those forums, the "Negateers" are "Dive Gods" who dived during the old days and the "Sunshine Pumpers" are called "Strokes" who don't adhere to the Dive Gods' vision of what divers should be. So it appears to me that this a phenomenom that is not unique to just the VN. With that said, both camps are basically, as alluded to by a previous poster; somewhat a critic. I look at critics as nothing more than someone who gives their "opinion" of a product, good or bad. I have watched many crappy movies and eaten some atrocious meals based on rave reviews by critics based on their "expert" opinion. I have also had the opposite. Mind you those reviews by the "experts" have been based on actually seeing or trying the product beforehand. It appears that many of the critics here are giving their reviews before seeing or experiencing the product. I do understand that the recent coaching hire and recruiting phase has helped some of those critics make these reviews, but; again to use the movie example;; there have been many busts and winners regardless of the all-star casts, no names, award winning producers, or first timers. I will reserve my review until after I see the product and the "setup" for the sequels. My prediction (hopes) for this year: A positive winning percentage, maybe a game upset, and a bowl game we possibly win. I also think we will see a different attitude from the players on the field, and a coach who doesn't throw in the towel. JMO & GBO:thumbsup:

He's one of the posters who hasn't figured out how to post an opinion without being an *******. Or maybe he has, and is an ******* intentionally.

The reality is that there exist three primary breeds of poster:

The sunshine pumper: see original post

The negavol/naysayer/etc...: see post #8

The realist: the Vol fan who always wants us to win the SEC and hopes we find a way to do it, but who sees where we are as a program and knows how unlikely it is. The realist knows that the way back to the top is exemplary coaching and Top 5 recruiting classes. He understands that Jones is not proven on this level, hopes he will excel, win some games we shouldn't this season, take us back to a bowl win, parlay that into a Top 10 recruiting class, and repeat until the Top 10 is Top 5 and we're NC contenders. The realist also realizes that if drastic improvement doesn't happen within two years, it's not likely to at all under Jones.

I get why the SP's hate the NV's, and vice versa. For the realists it's doubly irritating for having to suffer them both.

I like your analogy with the movies and such but I don't think it works here. See, we play in the SEC. We're not producing some fringe, indie piece that might somehow become the darling of Cannes and Sundance followed up by a couple of Oscars despite being financed on a shoestring and a prayer with no known talent to help the marketing effort. We're in blockbusterville where the front end investment is massive and the margin for error can be razor thin. We swim with sharks in this league and it's kill or be killed.

Negative minded people are always Losers in life and are miserable people.

Their only real fun is to attempt to pull down everyone they can into misery like they live in constantly.

My condolences oh ye sad miserable loser but you can NEVER pull me down into the misery that you freely choose to live in.

I honestly pity these sad, pathetic people and I pray they get the psychological help they so badly need very soon.

May God bless and comfort them.

VFL...GBO!!!

A. Being negative doesn't make you a loser in life. If you don't have a bad feeling when you look at our program in its current state then you're oblivious.
B. This is a fan made website and people have different opinions no matter what the topic is, don't take it so seriously.
C. Being blindly optimistic has its place for this world but if you fail to see the negatives here then I question your ability to fully comprehend reality and my next question is where can I get those drugs?

Memphis Vol, you ever need a friend Im here for ya man. Ive been crucified so many times for telling these "strawberries & Champagne" pumpers like it is. They dont want to hear it, and they make you feel like you are the scum of the earth for being negative. When you develop diabetes from the man's obsession with "strawberries and champagne" and get a septic ulcer he'll lecture you on what steps you should have taken to prevent it and why whatever doctor you've consulted is the wrong choice and how you'll never recover...he has to side with winners soooo . you'll understand

I think most people understand that barring some miracles we needed immediate impact DBs and a marquee RB if we're going see any significant improvement in 2013. We needed OL in order to not take a step back in 2014. None of that happened. Being honest and realistic, not negative, 2015 will now the the first and very likely the only chance that CBJ is going to have to show that he can move the dial in the right direction. CBJ was not a Grudenesque hire and his honeymoon was only going to last so long things were moving in a straight line. This was the first dip and it was a big one. It did not help him that other recently downtrodden programs outperformed him and his staff. In the coming weeks, everyone will settle down and then we'll all wait to see if he's a gameday miracleworker as some on here seem to believe. This is all part of the ebb and flow of rebuilding.

Excellent post. This is pretty much how I see it.

" I have no doubt in my mind that Dooley will get Tennessee back on top"

Most of volnation February 2010.

Bingo. Blind optimist sunshine pumpers don't look at things objectively. They just see what they want to see.

It may wind up being the same way with Butch. Despite the short timeframe, he definitely needed to do a little bit better than he did with this signing class. However, I am willing to give him a little bit of a pass because of the awful shape in which Doofus left things. For next year's class however, Butch will have no excuses. Next year's class needs to be Top 10 at the very minimum.

Additionally, there will be no excuses on this either. Jones needs to coach us up to at least upset somebody with a pulse and get us to 7-5 and a bowl game at a minimum. If he does that, then I will be satisfied with his progress, and somewhat hopeful for the future.

Of course they do. That's part of the deal when a new guy comes in.

Yeah, and it's obvious the belly achers and constant whiners don't see things the way they want to see them, right?

Some people need negativity daily. We all know the type in our personal lives.

Boy, I'm sure glad our coach doesn't have this gloom and doom mentality a lot of this fan base has. I'm sure it would go a long ways with the team and prospective recruits. I'm sure this coaching staff would have every right in the world to look down on this program they've inherited, but I for one am proud to have a coach that sees the positive and embraces the challenge. The optimist sees the opportunity in difficulties. The pessimist sees the difficulties in opportunities. Get off the man's effing jock!! Let him actually do some coaching before we deem him a failure!!

For those based in reality, this is accurate. Whether or not it was "fair," he needed to hang onto Koelher, Green, and a few others. Didn't work out that way. As I mentioned in another thread, the best thing about this situation is that we'll get to see what Jones is made of as a coach.

And yes, if he fails to win a few games he shouldn't, have a winning season, and make a bowl game, the recruiting class will be mediocre and his chances of survival are slim.
