I have heard a local talk guy say that he does not like the Lane Kiffin hire (chip something). I'm all for Lane Kiffin and feel that he is the best person available for the job. Hands down! I looked on the internet to find key questions that needed to be answered to have a championship type team. Well, I could find much. So I decided to ask the questions myself (i'm highly qualified:))

Here's the scenerio: In a room is Butch Davis, Mike Leach, Brian Kelley, Chris Peterson, Garry Patterson and Lane Kiffin. You have six question that you need to get answered to build your team (I know there could be more, but work with me). Who would be the first person that you would ask each question too?

Questions to get answered:
1. What are the keys to assembling a championship type staff?
2. How do I recruit all-american (heismen trophy canidates) type players and structure an offense around them?
3. What are the key componets and philosophys in structuring a championship type defense?
4. What does it take to win a National Championship?
5. Have you ever been in a institution or program that failed? and what did you learn from it? (You have to know what not to do in any line of business to be successful)
6. Insert your own question.

I think Lane would be the person that I would asked the most quedtions to first. His knowledge and background interest me. You don't have to know everything to be an expert but you have to always be able find the answers to be one.(Monte, Carrol).

I know there's more to it than that but its a good start.

Hope I didn't waist your time reading this.

Chip Cain the practice report guru. I wouldn't look to far into anything that dude has to say. I caught some of his show today and he sounded like someone took his toy away over some USC/ UCLA discussion.

Heard it also, I wanted to call in but I was driving and couldn't get my ducks lined up in time to ambush him.

I support Lane but in that example I would ask Butch those questions first.

I totally agree that he was a great hire. He is a great guy that will bring in a lot of experienced personnel around him that will bring in the recruits. The SEC is a damn tough conference-every game is a "bowl game" within the conference.

The thing that got me was he was trying to talk down on a subject (recruiting) that Josh Ward is pretty up to date on and savvy about.

I used to listen to Ward & Pennington pretty regulary, but I try hard to find something else when I'm driving around in the 12-3 range.

Butch would rather play Duke, NC State and Virginia as opposed to Florida,Georgia and Alabama.......I cannot blame him....several ACC people have told me this and it makes sense.

Thanks for the reply. But has Butch coached a Heismen Trophy winners? How many National Championship teams has he been around? Is his Dad Monte Kiffin? Hard to believe you would ask Butch about D over Lane. I feel that Lane knows how the lack of communication can destroy a program (Radiers). I think he knows what it takes to make it work, just has not proven it yet. Can you name anyone on Butch Davis staff that you would take over Lane's staff so far? How far can Butch reach to get help in Football family? Further than Lane? Maybe I'm reaching but Lane is the up and coming Warren Buffet of football. Ok, maybe to much reaching:)

:good!: I might call in tomorrow and ask some question to old chipper. I don't know who he wanted though.

Well I don't want to turn this into a Butch vs. Lane because I wanted Lane before Butch, however to answer your questions(in the order you asked):

1. Yes. He was on the coaching staff of Jimmy Johnson at Miami in 1987 when Vinny Testaverde won the Heisman.

2. 1 technically (1987 Miami Hurricanes) but he laid the groundwork for Coker when Miami went undefeated and won the NC in 2001. Like it or not that was his team and that team, that year, they would have won with anyone at HC.

3. No. Irrelevant question but Butch Davis has a great defensive mind in his own right. That is main field of his expertise.

4. Lane's staff is incomplete so ask me that later.

5. I don't see the point in the rest of your questions. Family help? But if you are talking about coaching consultation from a mentor type I think he has Jimmy Johnson's number. That's a pretty good go to guy. What do you think?

Butch is a great coach and recruiter that is undeniable. I am glad he is not at UT for the simple reason that I don't think that he is what Tennessee needed.

So although we disagree about who we would go to for answers, we agree that Lane will do well at Tennessee and we both can't wait for football in 2009.

GO VOLS!!!

No doubt! GO Vols! I like your answers. I have to think that coaching in the 80's is different then now and Jimmy J been out for awhile too, I would love to pick his brain though. I think people in the Football Family would be more apt to help an up and coming coach and a son of D guru. Butch didn't complete the job in 01'. A decision here and there and that 01' team under Butch may not have NC. To tough to argue though. At least someone has an oppinion. Thanks
