It's too coincidental that Cowher is unemployed and lives in Raleigh, and Hamilton was just in Raleigh last week - and Cowher could start on December 1st.

I am terrified to believe this myself - because if it wasn't true, i'd be devastated. Hope proven false is more cruel than having no hope at all, I think.

However, it's some of the few confirmed facts that we know - even Raleigh newspapers mentioned Hamilton being there - and it was the very next morning that Davis issued his adamant denial of any interest in the job. Sort of like he knew that Hamilton was in town to meet Cowher, and that he wasn't really going to be offered - so he burned the bridge to really try to deflect any more speculation about him, because it's hurting his team and his recruiting in continuing to be mentioned.

I know, I know - I can't allow myself to believe that we could get Cowher, but at what point do you say that he's all that fits what we know?

Also, and this is just a hunch, but I think that Kevin Steele comes home from Bama in all of this. Whether the HC is from the NFL or is a young up and comer, Steele would be tabbed to work with either until they got adjusted or up to speed with running a program at this level. This is just a feeling I have.

Just a quick question. If Kiffin has already been named the new coach, why delay the announcement? It's not like it's a secret we will have a new coach next year. Phillip stated that he would help with the transition, and we have all the recruits hanging in limbo. Wouldn't it make better sense to go ahead and make the announcement, so Kiffin could assemble his staff, and get after the recruits? That is his strength. A couple of the biggest recruits are going to be mid-termers, and probably can't wait to December to make a decision. Just my thoughts.........

I have been saying Cowher for weeks because he has been asked. He held a football clinic in Knoxville earlier in the year and I am sure he spoke with MH in private then and MH may have checked his pulse for returning to coaching. It's odd that he has not made any public statement about UT and coaching but thats how it went down in Pittsburg. Why else would a coach who was as successful as Cowher retire from the NFL at 47 when his team was stacked to continue being contenders unless the NFL politics of coaching did not set well with him.

If Tn could land Cowher, that would have to be one of the biggest hires ever at the college level. I can't think of another NFL coach with a name as big as Cowher that has decided to leave the NFL and go to the college game. Some may mention Bill Walsh, but he was old and in the twilight of his career. Cowher is still very young and in his prime.

Cowher, Steele, and a rising star at OC.

Be still my heart.

(We can always dream, right?)

Go Vols.

that is pretty good -- original, or a quote from someone else?

talked to a clemson fan today who said that a while back cowher was quoted as saying something about wanting to get back into coaching, but not until his youngest child was out of high school and she supposedly graduated this year. of course, he also said that cowher was interested in coming to clemson. :p

i would think that being a TV commentator would be a much easier job but maybe cowher wants new challenges.

I'm guessing MH may be looking at 10 to 20 guys i don't know how you can tier the list to 3 groups and the first tier be all NFL coaches with little if any college experience. If we are dreaming my first tier would be Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer,Bob Stoops. Then maybe Davis, Leach, Kelly,Kiffen
The fact that you have Mack Brown over Butch Davis means you probably don't pat much attention to football outside of UT.

Yes, that is true, my friend was in Raleigh for a tennis tournament, and the UT jet was spotted being in Raleigh......rumors were flying about Cutcliffe and Davis, but Cowher would be the x-factor.........an outside shot....he's worth the $4million too.......I wonder why they would wait to announce it?? maybe out of respect to Fulmer?

is still exploring and determining genuine interest in the position among a number of different choices. I think an offer of the job has not been made yet. Likely, 3-5 "finalists" that have genuine interest in the job will be identified, and interviewed, or not. Money will be discussed with each. Then, hopefully by Thanksgiving weekend(pipedream I know), a firm offer will be made to the first choice; if he declines they will proceed to number 2 and so on. I do not expect a long lag time between when the trigger is actually pulled and the first offer made, and when we get a coach (7-10 days max). The hang-up in all of this is IF one of our finalists (that is genuinely interested) has a team that's going to be playing in a meaningful game in January. Right now I'd say Leach is the only one who fits that profile. Butch Davis is now available Dec 1 if he wants to be. Kiffin is available now. Cowher is available now. Kelly may be in a BCS bowl, but in all reality will be available Dec 1. Gruden is the wildcard. He is a longshot, but perhaps no moreso than Cowher--if the Bucs don't make the playoffs, the Glazers may not beg him to stay. He has some genuine interest in our job, but he will not be available Dec 1. Thus, my guess is our new coach is among Davis, Kiffin and Kelly, in that order.

My gut feeling is this is going to be a pretty high profile hire. The neinas (spelling?) search firm has been a part of some pretty big hires, I don't think they'll make a subpar 'hire' for a program like UT.I'd imagine they'd like to keep their already impressive track record of hires flawless. I think that rules out kiffin and muschamp among other up and coming names with no HC experience.
I also have a feeling that the announcement is being held off as to not overshadow the rest of fulmers tenure as HC. Just a couple thoughts I have after sitting back and looking at this whole situation

First, I would love to see Leach as the new coach, but I will support any choice, although I am not so gung ho on Muschamp though. I am sure Kiffin has been interviewed, but the fact that he interviewed at Clemson as well means he either is not the frontrunner at UT, or wanted to interview with both schools before making a decision.

From indications (the post by a son of a FAU administrator that his dad was following Davis to Tennessee), I have concluded that it must be Davis's job to take or turn down. This would mean that Gruden and Cowher had passed on the job (some reports we didnt offer enough).

The orange tie was interesting today for Cowher. I like the possibility of Cowher, Kiffin, and Steele but am unsure how realistic that will be. I found myself pulling for Minnesota against Tampa Bay today so that we could have a shot at Gruden. I guess we all keep hoping for the best of the best scenarios and I hope that Hamilton pulls something off. I think we are all waiting for more disappointment after this season. It was great getting to wear volunteer orange at the UT/ UTC basketball game Sat. and feel good about it.
