Offense is about momentum in nearly all sports, especially football and basketball. In the same vein, defense is nearly all about consistency.

We have outscored our opponents 55-16 from the second quarter on in two games. 7 of those were a garbage time TD as well. We held another (better overall) team scoreless for nearly 4 quarters + OT.

This team still has a lot of question marks. Namely the O Line. But for once in a very long time I can't imagine us losing a game because of our defense. And now we have solid evidence that Shoop will make adjustments nearly immediately when needed.

Our defense has given up 13 and 24 points in two games, 16 total points outside of the first quarters. Many of us don't like getting behind early to anyone, but after last year when we led EVERYONE and managed to lose it's comforting to know that our defense isn't just going to be better the more the game goes on, but that it's going to be consistent because Shoop makes his adjustments almost the second he sees an issue.

App State and VT are not Florida, Bama, Texas A&M.

While I'm guardedly optimistic, both sides of the ball need to improve IMO

Cant say I am happy about the first quarter but based on the last two games, one thing you CANNOT say about Shoop is that he doesnt know how to make adjustments in game.

It's great he adjusts well on the fly but they must come out prepared.

Also, were giving up 185 yards a game rushing and haven't played a good offense yet.

No, they aren't. But APP state would play with Florida and possibly A&M. People keep acting like that was some momentous upset that they even hung around. They will finish the season in the top 25 with only a loss to us, barring injuries.

VT looks like we did two years ago. Tons of upside and talent, but mental mistakes costing them big. They'll be good in two years or so, just not right now. Doesn't change the fact our defense shut down one of the more talented offenses in the country for 3 quarters right now, though.

While I'm glad the vols won, what am I missing here? Vt beats us convincingly if they hold onto ball. That's not a d to hang ur hat on

I'd like to see the stats on missed tackles last night. In both games now we've struggled to actually make a tackle on first, second, and even third contact with the ball carrier. It was especially disconcerting to see VTs back hit in the backfield and still push to get a 3-6 yard carry.

Defense isn't about style points. A 2 yard TD is the same a 90 yard TD, and I've seen games with teams have 400+ yards on offense and the score end 14-3. The fact is this defense doesn't give up points when it gets dialed in. 16 points over 6 quarters against any competition is insane.

Oh, and in those 6 quarters? Our defense has caused 6 turnovers (To our 1.) So, we're averaging 3 turnovers a game, despite having all six of those happen in just 6 quarters.

.75 turnovers a quarter is a pretty damn good thing to "hang your hat on."

I'm still concerned with our defense. It helps that VT had 5 turnovers which was basically the difference in the game.

But I'm not too concerned about Shoop. He's only been here 2 games. I'm not expecting the '85 Bears defense overnight. It'll probably take a little time...I just hope we keep improving as the season goes on.

My main concern with this team is our passing offense. If all teams have to worry about is the run and screen passes we're going to struggle. Even with 5 turnovers and great field position,Dobbs had less than 100 yards passing.

Texas A&M, Bama offense >>>>>>>> App State offense

And not even close

As I said. They will be ranked in the top 25 by the end of the year and win 10 games or more. Bama is on a level that nobody else is even close to currently this year, and A&M has potential to be a top 10 team with the talent they have. Doesn't change that APP state would play A&M well. I don't think they'd win, but it wouldn't be a huge loss. And A&M wouldn't have a 22 point line like vegas had it for TN.

For sure. I love how people always refer to "if." The fact is we caused some of those turnovers and the others, we wanted the ball more than they did. It does no good to play the hypothetical game

Some of those were forced turnovers. Football is full of "what ifs." It is much better to play the what if game after a big win instead of a loss. UT out scored VT 45 to 10 when trailing by 14 points. The better team won yesterday by a country mile.

He is doing very well overall... the only time I am going to question him is next week if he doesn't try a rotation of Cortez, JRM, Bynum, Sapp, etc instead of Jumper.... if, after watching the game tape which screams at how poor a performance Jumper had, he still starts him, then I will totally question his sanity and coaching ability. Jumper practices great, but when the lights come on, he is lost. period.
