Contract basics. If you are fired prior to the end of the contract you get compensation, maybe as much as the face value of the remaining contract term. If you quit, you don't get anything and, in fact, may be required to pay something to the contract holder.

Spurrier quit.
Fulmer was fired.

Easier to understand now?

The point is genius, that Spurrier knew he couldn't cut it and just chose to quit... as opposed to siting around and just waiting to be fired so that he could collect the buyout money.

No more soda pop and hot dogs for the ushers now...

I'm sure the UTAD could find other places cut money/expenses besides hot dog/sodas for the ushers.

Sounds like that's the Athletic Department's responsibility, not his. Sure there's a causal effect here, but at the end of the day, it's the Athletic Department that decided not to pay the ushers. Also, not to be cynical, but that's the risk you take as a per-hour, non-contract employee. They can tell you to puch out early. You, of course, can walk out. The glory of capitalism at work.
