I’m 32. I may be the last generation, or youngest group of vol fans to remember any semblance of success or dominance. But as I watched the game tonight, much like the past few years, I expressed much frustration during the game and that frustration was vocalized in the presence of my 5 year old son, who doesn’t even understand that Tennessee Volunteer football wasn’t even a big deal at any point in history.
In one point, I feel bad for my son. He will most likely have to know Tennessee football as an irrelevant placeholder on the mid-tier of the SEC East for a little while longer. At the other hand, I am deathly afraid of him becoming a Dawg fan or even a dreaded Bammer, as we live on the state line of GA/TN/NC not too far from too many Bama fans.
My sister in law and brother in law are UGA grads. I am surrounded by the obvious success and influences of UGA football. It sickens me that UT football has lost its influence and presence in North Georgia. I have one UT friend in the area that lives in the area. What happened? I hate it for my son, and for the future generation of college football fans in the area.
All in all, college football and fandom doesn’t conclude anyones identity. But it is a fun and interesting cultural influence to add to the family tradition that brings us together during times like we’ve had the past couple years with covid. I guess I just have to much anxiety and worry about not having that with my son in a direct way through Tennessee football.
