I saw the replay of the end of the Georgia game last night after work. It happened to be on, and as I watched the ending again, I was amazed at the last two plays before Georgia threw their long TD with 10 seconds left.
I didn't catch the defenders' numbers, but on both plays preceding the Georgia TD, our defenders tried to jump the routes and nearly picked off the passes, missing by mere inches. Just a few inches or a split second sooner, we could have intercepted the ball and not even needed a Hail Mary to win.
Amazing how football is a game of inches.
It's easy to see a DB get beat on the long TD by the Georgia WR's stutter step, but it often goes unnoticed how well and close the defense is playing on other plays.
Football is a game of timing and inches.
