Ok boys and girls, Volnation is in full on panic mode. I have seen atleast 25 threads questioning our coaches, our scheme, Dobbs, receivers, just about everything. I just don't understand what is so hard to understand about last nights game. I'm not a d1 football coach, but I am a high school football coach at a pretty successful program. I will do my best to break down what I saw last night.

1. Our offense was not playing with a full deck all night. People seemed to have forgot how bad our line really is. Dobbs mobility has really helped avoid a ton of sacks the last few games. Last night we faced the best defensive front in the SEC and possibly the nation. They were able to get constant pressure in our back field the entire night with only a 4 man front. That means they were able to drop 7 guys in coverage on consistent basis. That in turn led to very few openings for our WR's, which led to multiple coverage sacks for Dobbs. When they did bring a blitz it was open season on Dobbs, he literally had no room to run our zone reads, and Hurd was routinely hit at the line of scrimmage.

As a play caller my self, I understand what its like to be in a game like that. I cannot possibly stress to you how hard it is to call a game when they can get consistent pressure with a 4 man front. This is everything, I cannot possibly stress this enough. Your are calling a game with a hand tied behind your back. Butch and co. love to use motion, and jet sweeps to get match ups they want and to spread the field. He also loves to send the HB out of the back field on passing downs. When the defense is getting that kind of pressure you have to take measures to protect your QB and that means keeping would be pass catchers such as a RB, or TE in the box for max protection. Match that with how many defenders are dropping back in coverage and you have a recipe for disaster.

To most of you the above points probably are common sense, but for some reason we have fans that honestly do not have a clue about football and what all goes into a successful offense. Dobbs will be fine, the kid is going to be a great QB for us. The offense that Butch runs works. It has worked at every stop, and we've all seen the spread option work in the SEC. So please stop with the whole "butch's offense will not work" "did they find a blue print to stop dobbs" garbage.

Facts are we are a very very young talented team, that has been plagued by injuries. We cannot and will not beat a great defensive team with this offensive line. It's just not going to happen, not this year. We all said at the beginning of the year that a bowl would be a great season for the youngest team in the nation, with the hardest schedule. We still have a great chance at that guys. We get to go to Nashville and beat the crap out of those losers to clinch our bowl bid. I can't wait, and im excited and proud of these kids. They play hard every single play and that alone is a huge upgrade from years past. That's how I know Butch has this team on the right track. Those young men wouldn't play the way they do if they didn't have complete faith in this staff.

Anyone who's been here any length of time knows this is how this place rolls.

If we win some games, we're awesome. We're going to win the SEC next season, we would have won the SEC this year if [insert new factor], and we'd beat any team in the nation right now. Our coach is the best ever and every team in the land will want him.

Then when we lose, we're back to being bums, our players suck, and our coach just can't get it done.

Nevermind we're where we expected to be and those with common sense know we still have a lot of work to do.

I don't see any panic at all and only minimal questioning, most of which is for the purpose of discussion.

The overall feeling seems to be resignation. Fans are as beaten down as the players-- more so, really, since the fans have been dealing with the rollercoaster of UT football for almost a decade.

People need to lower expectations. I admit I got big headed but losing by 1 possession to Mizzou is nothing to be upset about. A very good team that is starting to click on offense which makes them even harder to handle. Im surprised Pinkle hasn't recieved calls for other coaching jobs.

There's definitely room for questioning and criticism, and I'm sure Jones would agree that's to be expected.

I just find it funny how extreme the fans get. I mean all last week it was a forgone conclusion that we beat Missouri and if you questioned it, you were destroyed. Now some of the same will be the ones proclaiming "Why are you shocked we lost, we're a work in progress" and so on.

I wonder how old the negavols are? I assume they are mostly under 30.

I'm older and a Negavol. Followed The Vols since the late 70's. One thing I know for sure is that 95% of all fans are negative. Some go to extremes with their negativity. No one stays positive 100% of the time.

How the hell anyone stays positive after the last 7 years of Vol football is beyond me. I find it funny when negavols call each other negavols.

Yes, the bipolar aspect of Volnation can be "a great challenge."

It's almost impossible to have an intellectual discussion on some topics. If CBJ posted some of his presser comments here, he would be labeled a "negavol" and "not a true fan" and told to go hop on another bandwagon.

There's a difference between a "negavol" and a "realist". Some think anyone who doesn't think we're 100% awesome are negavols.

They may not be the best staff in America but they may have had the toughest job in the nation. Haven't figured out why we only think improvement of year 1 and 2 is big upset wins left and right.

Its our program and we wanna win now!

Agree with OP. Tough to manage games with O or D line limitations. It is even more apparent when the teams are closely matched, as with Tn vs Mo. This is not a situation that can be resolved by coaching only, although coaching can help minimize the impact. If this could be forwarded 2 years (S&C and experience), this game would be a major mismatch, with TN advantaged. However, our reality is that we have youth / true freshmen matching up with 4-5 year seniors

I agree with this for the most part.

Disagree with the best defensive front....how about Alabama?

We will be fine but the coaches didn't have a great game in terms of adjustments and game management. I too have a very strong football background as a player and a coach and yes there were many mismatches. Our O-line is bad and we have youth all over the field. However, the coaches have to put these players in the best position to win. I don't subscribe and never will to playing the game with halfs being two separate games. We had three timeouts at the end of the half and could have potentially gone up a score and getting the ball back in the second half...score again and you are up two possessions potentially. We do a great job in our 2 minute offense...why not take that advantage?

OP, as a play caller such as yourself, if you can't find any production with the plays you ran in the first half do you keep running the the same plays in the second half? I surely hope not. Our vols on the other hand seem to have the same mentality one of my old coaches did, " were gonna run it till we get it right ". Meaning no matter what the defense changed we would run the same plays over and over expecting them to finally break out and magically work.

I like to think of myself as a posirealist. I predicted 7-5 before the season, but realistically I thought 6-6 was probably the most likely outcome. It's not a great season, but a bowl is what we need more than anything, and we are one easy win away from attaining that goal.

This.....but no one but the sunshine know anything about anything..we must all be completely stupid or we know more than the sheep and we see flaws in their Shepard n they don't like that..

I thought 6-7 wins and this staff is avg..which was my projection btw. if they got 8 above avg n 9 true championship caliber.. I think we have Johnny majors 2.0 but cbj will not get that long.

Everyone around us at the game was questioning the time management before halftime. My question was why we were not trying to move the pocket to take advantage of Dobbs' elusiveness and help the OL? It was frustating to watch the lack of adjustments on the coaches' parts.

GO VOLS!!!!

#VolReport: Jacob Gilliam Media Session (11/11/14) - YouTube 5:00

Good points, point. I'm not pointing fingers, and don't won't to speak for anyone else, but J. Gilliam said a couple of weeks ago, about last year, that the team became "complacent" / "I don't think we took it serious enough" / "we put ourselves in good positions, but didn't finish it...." He seems to be saying that we HAVE the talent (which is a little bit different than your approach).

Just wondering if it's at all possible, even considering the strong Mizz 4 man front, that some fans, or ESPN commentators, saw any bit of complacency last nite, regarding time mgmt., play calling, anything (of repetitive behavior from last year's Staff calls, or whatever Jacob was referring to, that might lead again into next year)?

I realize '015 and '016 are coming, but this is just a current observation.
