Out of sheer pre-season curiosity I decided to look up what’s going on with our wave of recent QB’s that left the program. Here’s what I’ve got:

JG (NFL): Doesn’t look likely to make the Cardinals final roster. All predictions I’ve seen have Trace McSorley taking the final QB spot for Arizona.

JT Shrout (Colorado): The Colorado head coach has said the starter will be a game day decision. But it’s down to JT and another guy.

Kaidon Salter (Liberty): Not named the starter in the wake of Malik Willis’ departure to the NFL. No idea where he sits on the depth chart.

Harrison Bailey (UNLV): Named co-starter (?) for the Rebels. I had no idea you could have co-starting QB’s.

Brian Maurer (Stephen F. Austin): I literally can find nothing on this one. No depth chart, no announcement, no message board. It’s like this school doesn’t exist on the internet.

So there’s your quick rundown. For those still in college, I mean no disrespect to anyone on this list, they are obviously amazing football players or else they wouldn’t be playing at the level they are at. But if they aren’t blowing the doors off the competition at these smaller schools, I’m just not sure they were going to have much success here in the most brutal conference in all of football. I hope they all prove me wrong and go on to have amazing careers. Best of luck to them all.

So does anyone have any insight into Maurer? I’m seriously getting nothing.

Shrout tore an ACL and has just recently been able to go full speed.

Yeah I was looking for some info on Maurer earlier and found nothing.

I thinkkk he will start. I saw some clip of their spring game and the only qb I saw was him.

No different than an Ainge/Schaefer situation in 2004. They will do 2 till one separates himself.

Not sure on Maurer but Stephen F Austin has their starting QB, Trae Self, back from last year. He threw for 3201 yards and ran for 311. Had 31 TDs. I would guess he would be the starter.

Yeah he and another player are on the Walter Payton award watch list (the FCS heisman)

Brent Schaeffer and Erik Ainge. Not that long ago. Unless I’m old.

Meanwhile we have one of the top 2-3 QBs in the conference, a good backup, a promising freshman, and one of the top rated QB recruits in the country joining us next year. Thanks Coach!
Amazing how quickly Heup changed our fortunes. Just remember where we were one year ago. Heup is two years ahead of schedule imo.

Stephen F. Austin's (SFA to us in Texas) site shows Mauer on the roster (no picture though)
https://sfajacks.com/sports/football/roster
SFA will play Jacksonville State this weekend on ESPN (College Football TV Schedule), so you can look for him there.

From the game preview Maurer is not mentioned and they have a QB on the roster that made 3rd team all conference so I'm thinking he is not going to start

Game Preview: No. 10 Stephen F. Austin vs. Jacksonville State - Stephen F. Austin

On the third team, quarterback Trae Self and kicker Chris Campos rounded out the preseason All-America selections from Stephen F. Austin. Self paced the WAC with 3,201 yards and 266.8 passing yards per game in 2021, to go along with 28 touchdowns to just nine interceptions through the air. Self gained an additional 311 rushing and scored three times on the ground for the Lumberjacks

JG has looked better than McSorley in the preseason games.
