ok, not counting on turnover ratio or penalties, here's how i see it breaking down this Saturday:
Defense:
1. our LB's. must be very disciplined this weekend. being out of position against USM is one thing. being out of position against FL's offensive speed is another. the misdirection of that offense could cause the lb's fits. i think how we do defensively in large part depends on this unit. is this the week we break out some 3-4 possibly, maybe a wrinkle that FL hasn't seen?
2. defensive backs. if they lead the team in tackles, i'll show you a TN loss. otherwise, i dont' think they have to be superstars back there, but they do need to make good decisions and not get biting on play action and reverses.
3. Defensive line. would like to thin they can generate a pass rush, but in liew of that, what they really need to do is allow the LB's to make plays. take up blockers.
4.. def. scheme. as johnny would say: attack, attack, attack. dont' wait and see. be aggressive. if we spend the 1st qtr "figuing out" what they are doing....not good.
Offesnvily:
1. take advantage of the young D. run right at them. they haven't been tested up front and the way our O line seems to be playing, i'm hoping to see us come out and really pound it at them and beat them up for a 2nd half surge.
2. take some shots. Erik Ainge is having a great year so far and has proven to make good decisions with the ball. no need to get ultra fancy, but the play action could be great in this game. I expect EA to have a very good game.
3. chris brown. just keep doing what you're doing.
4. WR's. possession or not, picking up 3rd downs, and making 2nd down catches will be important. if you can break a few tackles, that'd be great too. make the catch. move the chains.
5. i want to see some more of creer and coker. these two have speed to break plays. they need to be utilized. i'm wondering if this is the game we finally see Coker lined up in the slot?
6. no more "outhinking" ourselves. stick to the game plan and execute it. if we're going to get cute, let it not look like a reaction play, but a dictation play. like we're already up and we're going for the throat?
7. ball control. TOP could play a factor here. if we have a decided advantage here, we can win this game.
8. recalling the 2000 game: can't settle for fg's. must get in the endzone when opportunities arrise.
Kicking game:
FL can't be allowed to start outside their 30 the majority of the night. coverage teams must play like they did in the 2nd half of the USM game. but if the coverage team that played against Cal shows up, could be a long night.
lastly...wondering about the tendinitis PH has in his foot and knee...how will that affect him? and will caldwell play, or be effective? two things to keep an eye on for TN fans. if either player is ineffective, that immediately gives us an advantage in this game.
bottom line:
we still don't know all that much about FL. i know we'd like to think we do, but the reality is, Troy and WKU just don't provide the same kind of tape study FL will have after watching the Cal and USM tape. i expect FL to be more prepared for TN than TN is prepared for FL. FL's offensive speed is not matched by our defense's penchant for being out of position at times.
FL's defense though has not been tested at all, and i expect us to be able to put up points against them.
home feild advantage goes to FL. Coaching advantage goes to FL. based on those two things, and what we already know about our D, i give the edge to FL in a high scoring game, where both teams show they have issues. I think we'll need FL to turn the ball over or kill drives to give us extra possesions for us to win this game. and i'd be fine with that.
ok, rip away......
