This weekend is the "weekend of in-state rivalries." Included among these in-state rivalries is Florida at Florida State. This season, Florida State, while having a better record than the Gators, have shown weakness against "inferior" teams. They narrowly defeated a 3-2 Syracuse team, 17-13. Then, two weeks later, slipped a 20-17 victory against 3-3 Wake Forest. The next week, the Seminoles experienced disaster in a devastating 20-17 loss to 3-4 Maryland. On November 11, they managed a 17-10 fourth quarter win against 4-5 North Carolina State. On the other hand, the Seminoles handily defeated a sturdy 5-0 Virginia Cavaliers team.
Florida, in their second game of this season, lost a disheartening 30-28 struggle with 1-0 Tennessee in the last seconds of the game. The Gators then fell to 3-2 LSU, 21-24. In week 7, Florida was toppled, 31-38, by 1-5 Mississippi State. Following the defeat in Starkville, the Gators gave 7-1 Georgia a scare, but eventually lost 24-31. Rebounding last Saturday, the Gators victimized a tough 6-3 South Carolina team, 48-14.
Florida will take the game this Saturday. Although they lost to Mississippi State, they also nearly defeated a top-10 ranked Georgia, and then made minced meat of the Gamecocks. Florida State, on the other hand, has barely defeated four teams that would be considered "inferior" to them. Only one of these teams had a winning record (3-2 Syracuse). This game may be just the thing Florida needs to go into a bowl game this season confident, and to go into next season optimistic. Additionally, Florida will be seeking revenge for a close last-minute defeat at home last year against the Seminoles. I look for a very good, close game: 34-31 Florida.
