"ADDITIONAL EYE-CATCHERS AND NEW NAMES
Cai Bates, ATH, Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater: There might not be a hotter prospect in the Sunshine State right now than Bates, who reports nearly two dozen new offers over the past week and a half. He’s a wide receiver-turned-cornerback that’s extremely green, but full of upside with his tentacle-like arms. Bates is going to need some seasoning, but he made a difference for 24K on Saturday."

Cai Bates, DB, Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater: Last April, it was Florida signee Ja’Keem Jackson who kind of cemented himself as a blue-chip prospect on the turf of West Orange High. Bates had a similar performance Sunday. A converted wide receiver, Bates is still a work in progress from a technical standpoint, but he isn’t afraid to press at the line of scrimmage. More importantly, he can run and swat passes away with his tentacle-like arms. Bates picked off four passes as a junior.

247Sports Rankings Outliers: 2024 prospects we like more than the industry
247Sports Ranking: No. 107 overall, No. 11 CB

Next-Highest Ranking: Unranked, No. 74 WR
Of the 59 defensive backs who were measured at the most recent NFL Scouting Combine, 45 of them came in at 6-feet or taller. Just six of them were 5-foot-10 or shorter. So, it’s safe to say that length is key when it comes to high-end secondary players, and Cai Bates – who is just a shade under 6-foot-2 – has plenty of it. A converted wide receiver, Bates has only been playing cornerback for less than a year now at Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater, but the early returns have been extremely positive. He picked off three passes in a playoff game this past fall and held his own this winter on the 7v7 circuit against top-flight wide receivers. Ohio State, Alabama, Texas A&M and Penn State have all offered Bates in recent weeks.
