Fist fights during games

I've seen plenty of aggressive jawing back and forth in Neyland between our fans and the visiting, but as far as I can remember the majority of the fights I witnessed occurred during the Dooley and Jones years, and those were orange-on-orange fighting. The only outlier I can recall happened during a home game against UF. Folks forget they're there to watch the game and relax.

I saw about 10 different fights the year we played in Gainesville, FL and lost on that crazy fluke missed tackle with Dobbs and co. I don't remember how many years ago that was. maybe 5? it was crazy. I saw fans jumping 5 rows down to punch each other. It was an early game too. haha. I had fun down there other than the end of the game. The Florida fans did not think they were going to win that game. But they did.

You're not from around here, are you? Boogerman is as East Tenn as it gets. Bogeyman and/or Boogeyman are second rate imports.

No, grew up middle Tennessean. However, I was speaking academically. The term used in the OP was Booger Man, two separate terms. Boogerman, as you said, is a more local variant and specific to the mid and Southern USA. And like I said it was a Sega game. No matter, thanks for the reeducation on "Boogerman" as a dialectal lesson. And I mean that.

Well considering i have been in law enforcement for nearly 20 years as well as working in the healthcare side as well, i am pretty sure in know what im talking about....85% of violent crime is linked to drugs and gang related activity, the rest is due to mental illness or the usual domestic/theft issues. I'm not saying there aren't horrific things out there, what i am saying is it's not as bad as some would portray and it's not changed in the last 30 years or so...maybe there are more idiots who try to excuse that behavior, but the 70s and 80s were much more violent

Just wait. It's coming, and in a sense, already here. It just has reached full kindling temperature yet. But it will, humans being what they are and doing what they do. Meanwhile, I don't dispute your assessment of the circumstances at this time. However, the times are changing for the worst, no matter the factors behind it, which is where you and I may differ-but that's actually irrelevant given the levels of danger we a bit now and will be seeing.

When I was in high school in the early 70s we had two bench clearing brawls. A spring practice scrimmage against another school sophomore year and senior year in a game with two minutes left.

I have seen MANY fights at games. 70s and 80s were known for seeing an entire side of the stadium stand and turn to watch a good one going on somewhere.
I must say that the vandy game both home and away are the games I have seen the most fights at. I remember when the vandy FB Coach Dinardos secretary got into a fight with a lady from Tenn at a game and they hit each other with umbrellas ,,,, lol

I have been around a lot of people at games in casinos bars some always seem to get too lit and too brave and can't help but run their mouth. I have seen visiting fans be totally embarrassed by their fan base. I had a friend, a guy who had won regional bodybuilding competitions years ago, he was strong as an ox, an Alabama fan, was exiting the Vandy Bama game in Nashville and saw a Bama fan knock out a security guard. He grabbed the guy, held him in a head lock until police came and got him. Ultimately my friend wound up with a broken nose several surgeries went on for months. He did the right thing though. Vandy recognized him later but I don't care where you are at, any event, I have found it is better to just ignore ignorance than stooping down to some else level. It works a lot better that way. Unless it's a physical attack, better just to ignore ignorant trash. Believe me.

These newer generations would faint if they saw some of the things from the 70s, 80s, hell even the 90s...Who else remembers UT and Vandy in a brawl before the game near the interlocking UT at midfield and Dale Carter taking his helmet off and beaning like 6 Vandy players in the head with it lol

Chemtrails = Aggression. Been on I24. I40 lately? People are MAD AS HELL! "Aerosol Geoengineering" Do the homework. I know. DEAF EARS. Don't be a sheep. Ask Questions, and dare to resist conformity. The Chit is happening. That weird azz Sky---streaky, Lines and XXX's (No that isn't "Vapor Trails" that EXPAND instead of disappearing) should get your attention; but 80% are too distracted to even notice what is in their face. Label me however you wish. Ignorance is your friend.

I remember when Dinardo was at Vanderbilt his personal secretary (female) belted a Tennessee fan (female) in the face in the stands. Ironically it was the year someone made up a bunch of "Bop the Wop" buttons leading up to the game.

1991.
I remember the fight but not the helmet swinging. Never heard of anything of the sort happening at that game.

At the end of pregame warmups when UT headed for the locker room, Carter ran right through the Vanderbilt players warming up instead of running to the side which started the brawl just outside of the north endzone.

Fair enough. Just seemed odd to see a dog outside wrapped up in a blanket. With that said it's pretty obvious that the owners of Smokey probably keep it inside.

we have got to give the best care to Smokey, no matter what...Smokey is royalty...:D

GO BIG ORANGE...BEAT THE ANCHOR DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of Smokey am I the only one who finds it odd that Smokey is wrapped up in a blanket during games?

It's ridiculous. He's a hound not a lap dog. Growing up in the hills of East Tennessee we had up to 10 at a time (my dad bred and hunted Fox Hounds and other hound breeds) and none ever needed a blanket. If he's been coddled to the extent he's cold his handlers need to get him up moving around. Run him up the sidelines. Show him off. He's a fine looking dog, but he needs to be treated like a dog. They are happier and healthier that way.

I have a friend that lives in LA and is a big dodger fan. He says you dont by random tickets or you may sit in the wrong section. Sitting in the wrong section will get your butt kicked...

I remember one in the upper deck student section when we were playing UF. I’d say early 90s.

Just about saw one when we were in Gainesville this year. Some UF punks sitting in the visitors section.

That very well could have been me. I got in a fight at a home game vs. UF in the upper deck student section in the early 90s lol.

Saw a Memphis fan get tossed about 6 rows down the steps in LL in the late 80s, after he threw ice

I can only recall one fight in all of the games in all of the years that I have been going to games in Neyland. That was many years ago and it was a Florida game. It might have taken place in the mid 90’s.

However, this past weekend was my first ever away game and during the game, there was a bloody fight. I know for sure one was a Mizzou fan due to the yellow pullover but am unsure if the other was one of ours. How prevalent are fights during games? Personally, I think fist fighting over a football game is stupid.

Of note, I have seen police escort fans out a few times but am unsure if it is necessarily due to fighting.
A lot more prevalent since they started selling alcohol.
Considering the first ever match-up between Tennessee and Alabama happened in 1901 and ended with a 6-6 tie and the fans rushed the field and fought each other, I'd say fights have been happening at games for awhile lol

It happens. I heard of several, especially at away games, but witnessed one pretty bad one at Legion field when I was in the band in the 80s. Just to the right of where the band was sitting, an Alabama fan spilled his drink on the girlfriend of a UT student. That sparked a fight that ended when the two of them fell over the rail about 15 feet into the tunnel below. I think both were hurt pretty badly, but never really found out for sure. We saw them go over the rail, but that was it. We weren’t blessed with 60000 instant reporters with cell phones then.

That one was a classic😁. A couple of years later she ended up working at the same company as my wife.
