Hello Vol Nation!

My two best friends and I are coming into town the weekend of October 25th, for the sole purpose of watching a Tennessee football game. We take a trip every year to a college stadium we haven't seen before to watch great football, soak up a great college football atmosphere, and generally whoop it up like a local.

We are all from Portland Oregon, and HUGE college football fans. Two of us are Oregon State Beavers, and the odd man out is an Oregon Duck fan. We've never been to Knoxville (much less Tennessee), and could use some advice.

Is there any place to look for tix where we are not going to just get killed on ticket price? Maybe someone on this board recognizes true college football fans and would be willing to sell some tix for a relatively fair price? We certainly are not looking for charity!!

When we make one of our annual pilgrimages, we come ready with all the home team gear and if you didn't know better, you would swear we were long time Tennessee fans. I'll even heckle Bama like I bleed Volunteer Orange!!!!!

Also, any advice you may have on "traditional" things we should see or do around campus would be great. We treat the weekend like we are long time alumni who haven't been to a game in years, and need to soak up as much Tennessee Volunteer karma as possible. We go to the pep rallies... visit the "sacred" football sites...etc.

Help us out!... what do we need to know about the Volunteers?

Much thanks in advance.

You couldn't have picked a worse day for this thread.

I did watch last night... and of course cursed Fulmer like the rest of you.

As a LONG time Oregon State fan I can tell you that the same upwards transformation we've seen seems to be in step with the downward trend you Vol fans feel.

For those that don't know the history, OSU hadn't seen a winning season in my lifetime of 30 years (at the time).. until 1999. It's hard for you I'm sure to relate to that... but if you think it is hard to swallow an opening day overtime loss to a PAC-10 team... think about not having a winning season EVER... and still be a fan.

At this point you should know I haven't missed a home game since 1993... so I indeed bleed orange... just Beaver orange -vs- Volunteer orange.

I attribute our success of late (4 bowl wins in 5 years) to the parity in recruiting that has happened since they reduced scholarships. In the past the power house schools, of which UT is certainly a member, could more or less "stockpile" all the truly great players. With the limitation on scholarships the talent is much more spread out than it used to be in the "hay days" of the past.

The same upswing we have seen... has had the unfortunate affect of hurting the dynasty that UT and a handful of other schools (ND, Ohio State, Nebraska, Florida State...etc) had seen in the past.

That said... GO Vols... who has some advice for us?

There was another thread, I think from a Texas fan, who is coming to Knoxville to watch a game this season, and got some good advice IIRC. I'll see if I can find it.

I don't know - by that point, we might be 2-4 so tickets should be cheap & plentiful. But the above is so true - truly the worst day you could have asked that question!

Buy from a scalper outside the stadium, but you cannot miss the running through the T. Luckily it looks like we'll have more than a few losses by then, so you should get a good deal, but despite that there's no place like Neyland on gameday, despite our mood right now.

If I was you, depending on when you'll be here, I'd take a moderate hike in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Hit Market Square & Gay St for night life.

I learned alot by using the search tool and saving the good info about local flavor, tailgating, etc into notepad file and will no doubt be prepaired when I finally move up there.

Folks here are nice but as has been said, today is just not the day.

On retrospect, I suppose I should have allowed for a few days of mourning... but we are so damn excited to come down for this game!

Go to Gus's Good Times Deli.
It costs an arm and a leg on game day but it's worth it. He's been featured in SI many a time.
