So the wife and I decided to take a road trip to the Charleston area. Looking to do it on the "cheap". No fancy dinners, just funky places we can wear shorts, shirt and flip flops. Thought we would spend 3 days in Charleston area and then maybe move down to Savannah.
So...

Need some advice on where to stay, eat, visit. Don't have to be in Charleston. Can do Beaufort or Georgetown even. Real flexible. Just looking for comfortable and clean bed...don't want to spend a ton of money. Save that for food and beer :)

Any suggestions would be great!

When you go to Savannah, you need to go eat at the Crystal Beer Parlor.

Folly Beach area

This. Folly is a nice beach. Taco Boy is a great California style taco place in Folly. Cold beer, over 30 different tacos and homemade guacamole.

The market in downtown Charleston is great to walk around and just look at the crafts and artists.

Rainbow row in Charleston is a cool section of town to walk and look at the historic houses and the ocean.

Make sure to catch a RiverDogs game in Charleston

River Street is the place to go in Savannah, maybe hit up Tybee Island.

In Savannah?

Just use choice hotels. Don't stay downtown, it'll be expensive. You can stay on 204 and it's only a 10-15 minute drive to downtown. I lived in Savannah for 7 years. It's a fun spot, a lot better than Columbia SC

There's a lot of places to stay near I-95. If you go down 17 you may wanna stay in Beaufort.

Not going to Columbia...going to Charleston area. Flying by the seat of out pants. Going to stay in that area for 2-3 days, hang at beach, walk around, etc. Then might move on to Savannah.

Eat at Sullivan's on Sullivan Island, IMO.

You said it before I could.

Great restaurant, and my father's favorite place on Earth. On my parents' last trip down there, he just said to hell with the other places and ate at Sullivans 3 times on a 4 day trip.

Ye Olde Ice Cream Shop is a good lunch place.

Magnolia's in Downtown Charleston is probably my favorite restaurant I have been to. Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar is also very good. Had a great meal at Atlanticville on Sullivan's Island last time I was over there.

I'm partial to Isle of Palms myself. More low key. Beach is bigger with less people than Folly. Always stayed with friends whenever I went down there so I don't have any hotel suggestions.

Any time I've gone to Savannah I like to stay down down just for the convenience of not having to find parking. Just go a few blocks back from Riverstreet and it drops about $50/night less.

I'm originally from there. Definitely check out downtown, the market, the battery, etc. Restaurant downtown on the water called Fleet Landing, cool atmosphere and standard pricing.

I understand that. I live in Columbia now. i moved from Savannah where I lived for 7 years. I was comparing the 2.

Noisy Oyster is casual place with wide selection of food at good prices for downtown. They have a few local brews on tap. Bubba Gump is another. Both are right by the Market.

Southend Brewery is a bit nicer place to eat, cost a bit more. Benefit is their micro-brewed beer. Not craft but not bad.

Lived in Charleston for about 12 years. Avoid Hymans, tourist trap. Can't recommend Noisy Oyster anymore either, service has gotten terrible. Fleets Landing is excellent. AW Shucks remains one of my favorites. If you find yourself on Shem creek, give The Wreck a try.
For adult refreshments try the rooftop bar @ Vendue Inn. The Blind tiger is also a great watering hole. Again, if on Shem Creek (recommend you at least check it out) try Reds Icehouse.

Hope this helps and have a great trip.
