10 of Butch Jones first 20 games have been against top 10 teams. I would like to see any coach have that schedule when trying to rebuild a program.

I would not like to see it done by another coach because odds are it's us again.

Losing to teams we "could have" beaten does not erase the fact Butch has coached 50% of his games against top 10 teams. That's a tall order and directly affects the the chances of winning the "could haves."

Nor does it erase the fact that we have had a horrible record for two years now!

Little correction here.
In Butch’s first 20 games, he will have faced
11 Top 20 teams
8 Top 10 teams
5 Top 5 teams
Average rank 7.2

By comparison, if you added Brian Kelly’s first 20 and Jimbo Fishers first 20, they would have faced
9 Top 25 teams (combined)
8 Top 20 teams (combined)
2 Top 10 teams (combined)
1 Top 5 teams (combined)
Average rank 13.5

To me its real simply. If you switch out the 2013 game @ Oregon and the 2014 game @ Oklahoma, with unranked teams at home, we finish 6-6 last year and could easily finish 6-6 this year. Even with those two teams switched, Butch would have faced more ranked and higher ranked opponents in his first two seasons than Kelly and Fisher combined.
Also remember that Fisher was 11-3 against unranked teams in the first top 20 games. Kelly was 10-7 against unranked teams in his first 20 games. Currently, Butch is 7-2.

My point is that most fans agree that Kelly and Fisher are solid coaches, but they have had a much easier paths than Butch Jones. If we would have finished 6-6 last year and went to a bowl, and finish a little better this year and go to a bowl, everyone would be much calmer than they are now.

Had UT beaten Vandy last season they would have gone to a bowl. Since you brought up Fisher and Kelly, they aren't considered good coaches because their teams go 6-6 and go to 6-6 type bowl games.

Butch's record so far is one game in the negative. He has taken care of business against every team he should beat except Vandy in 2013 and UF in 2014, and both of those games were basically toss-ups.

However, he stole a win against South Carolina. So he's one game in the hole right now.

The Vandy game could/should have been a win for many reasons: If Worley or North weren't injured, we probably win. If Pig doesn't block in the back, we win.

The only true terrible loss so far is against UF. Everything else is status quo with the exception of upsetting South Carolina.

Good post, I was needing something encouraging. :clapping:

Butch has already been here a year and a half and the Vols haven't won the SEC..... He is a failure
