Firing Philip Fulmer was the worst mistake a major program has ever made

Some are still living in the 90's and must've missed Fulmer's 5-6 and 5-7 seasons. Guess we can pretend like those were aberrations and not a downhl trend.

Biggest mistake was hiring Kiffin primarily to get his dad as DC and a shady all star recruiting staff, rather than basing the hire on the ability of the HC. Of course once he bailed after one year it really snowballed.

But to pretend like we would've been winning more than 7 to 8 games on a regular basis if we kept Fulmer is delusional. Granted in hindsight we'd prefer Fulmer over Dooley/Butch but the mistake wasn't firing him it was replacing him with Kiffin.

But we’ve kept making the same mistakes, with getting worse hires each time. The problem is most people think if you fire a coach then you should automatically hire a championship coach. It doesn’t work that way, some get lucky but most don’t. Basically, when you get rid of what you’ve got, you sign up to gamble, not to guarantee a great hire. We’ve had 3 busts in a row. Looking back I was willing to gamble at the time, but now I appreciate and miss Fulmer more every passing game and season.

And one of the guys who made the worst decision in program history is now conducting our search for a new coach and making a mockery of our program while doing it.:thud:

So if any coach after 15 years and championships has a 5-6 season then that's grounds for dismissal? I bet the weather is always perfect in your world!
The mistake was firing Fulmer and almost a full decade later UT is suffering for Hamilton's collosal mistake.

PF was a .820 win pct coach with Cut and a .650 coach without him. Which kinda figures into why Cut is still coaching and Phil is ..not.

Hiring Mike Hamilton qualifies as a worst-ever mistake, in light of all that transpired afterwards.

Look man. Fulmers success was based entirely on David Cutcliffe. While coach Cut was here we excelled when he wasn't here we struggled. I appreciate that Fulmer is all Vol and wanted to do a great job but he had a great group of coaches and was able to pull some great recruiting classes. We should've hired Coach Cutcliffe at the first possible opportunity.

Agree! On these sites It was pretty much ran by snot nosed spoiled disrepectful punks. Refering to him as Phil! Good years! Great years! Not enough personal character to gauge that some of our best seasons were 8 win. Some ofvthe greatest games against some of the greatest teams. Not all were wins. But nothing I mean nothing was left out on the field.Coach Fulmer was not done right. One of his downfalls was loyalty to his coaches. Hanging obto Sanders hurt him bad. Not a bad coach today but not ready for OC then
