Firing Fulmer was the worst mistake a program has ever made.

Kelly wasn’t a real option then. Maybe he should have been, but with just 2 seasons at Cincy......it just wasn’t. Had it “first” happened after 09 it would have been......at least a real option.

Troy - Lane.......I guess the lure of a washed up one time great DC was too much.

Don’t get me wrong. Monte was great.....but probably well past that once he came to Tennessee.

Still Patterson has had 7, 11 win or better seasons over the past 12.

I'm pretty sure Tennessee hoped we were getting the next Kelly with Butch. You're right at the time in 09 hiring Kelly was roughly the equivalent (a little better though) of hiring Jones in 2013. Sadly for us Jones wasn't the next Kelly after all.

Went from a major division 1 football school to a complete joke.

Every year since I think we’ve hit the low point...but nope, this loss to Kentucky was the worst in maybe our program’s history.

Rocky bottom.
How soon we forget. Does Wyoming homecoming game stir any memories?
The mistake was not firing PF, it was in hiring inadequate coaches thereafter.

How was he not a real option? He won the Big East and went to the Orange Bowl in his second season. He interviewed for the job and was considered the favorite by multiple national writers. Kelly said that he was even getting cards from every real estate agent in Knoxville.

I don’t know the ins and outs....I wasn’t doing the hiring. He just wasn’t. Patterson was coming off of 5 10 win or better seasons over the past 7.

Patterson was actually close to being the guy......they simply went with Kiffin.

I said maybe he should have been.....he just wasn’t.

What were you watching when he got fired? There was no discipline in the program on or off the field. Fulmer refused to hold assistants accountable or change with the game. The game passed him by both in concepts and recruiting. He left a thin roster with huge holes that he was no longer capable of filling.

I respect what Fulmer did at his peak. But he deserved to be fired when he was. I still like him as AD. Politics is a better venue for him than a practice field.

Hire a good coach and you are back in a flash. Penn State was a national power almost immediately after getting caught in the worst scandal in college football history.

If you type “vols football seasons” into google, scroll down and under “people also ask” the first question is “when was Tennessee good at football?”

As crazy as this sounds, perhaps hiring Fulmer to replace Majors may have been the worse mistake. Had Tennessee hired Spurrier for example, we have 3 National Titles likely and Florida is not a BETTER program than Tennessee. Tennessee becomes the premier SEC East power and is able to hire the best coaches and recruit the best talent.

Not even close, SOB should have been fired in 2005!
