I have questioned for some time why Tennessee does not use the 1-3-1 defense to win games. It was introduced against Alabama. Here is what happened each time they ran it:

W -Alabama[/B][/B] 2nd half 15:16 to 00:35 Gave up four 2 point baskets, no 3's, 3 turnovers
L -Vanderbilt 2nd half 18:09 to 14:43 Gave up one 2 point basket, no 3's, 1 turnover
W -South Carolina DID NOT USE
L -Florida 2nd half 9:46 to 2:48 Gave up no 2 point baskets, no 3 point baskets, 3 turnovers (1 point game at 03:38)
L -Missouri DID NOT USE unless for 1 minute
W -Georgia 1st half 5:09 to 4:08 Gave up 1 3 point basket
L -Texas A & M DID NOT USE
L -Mississippi State 30 seconds Gave up 1 3 point basket

I rest my case and will comment on this no more!

Martin has too much pride in his man to man defense even though the best coaches in CBB use zone almost exclusively. I will never understand why he hates it so much.

What defensive alignment this team uses is the least of its problems, IMO.

Whether you're in man or zone, you still have to possess fundamental on-ball and weak side defensive skills.

I was expecting a real Statistical Analysis, and while there are some "statistics" provided, there is absolutely no analysis! :pilot:

I have absolutely no idea if you are saying that the 1-3-1 works, or since we lost with it, that it doesn't work. Or, since the sample you provided is so small, that you do or don't want to see it again

I didn't think it was possible for another topic to annoy me more than the Bruce Pearl one but....I stand corrected.

It was the mainstay for ray mears.....still needs current team to play with intensity. This current team does not maintain intensity on defense...key to the success of 1-3-1 is having a very fast skilled man on the baseline (backside of 1-3-1)...

John Calipari and Bruce Pearl almost exclusively play man to man. I think they are pretty good. Kind of ironic. There are other good coaches who play man to man. I like playing zone against certain opponents, but as another poster said, it takes good fundamental basketball to play either.

Boeheim said he hasn't played a minute of man in like 20 years lol...so 1 style can work if coached properly.

My quote was "To win games!", momentum changer, nothing said about exclusivity, you won't find a team without a "second" defense that they don't use with a premier coach, except maybe UT with the Gene Keady Big 10 disciple. The opponents love it when they only have to practice against one defense without worrying about another. Ask the ones that have shredded the man-to-man this year. Ask the team they are playing today, which outscored Tennessee 34-22 in the paint in Nashville in that loss! Guess we worked on it since then, huh??

Should've used some 1-3-1 in the first half, clearly our man to man wasn't working.
You know I honestly don't believe you know enough about basketball to understand what I am saying! Either that or like the others say you are paid to save a job or two or three! Maybe even your own! PS The man-to-man was annihilated by Vandy in Nashville. It just does not work against every team or we would have not lost 11 games. We would be undefeated like Wichita State, wouldn't we?

So we should've used it more against Vandy (says you), but yet we didn't play it 1 second against Vandy today and held them to a record low in TBA?

Gotcha.

Not a fan of Bomani Jones I guess?

I did hate zone when I played, I thought it was weak. Now that I'm older I realize it's to cover the weak.

Jim Boeheim, John Chaney, Scott Drew, John Beilein obviously disagree, but to each their own.

I think some coaches use it effectively because they recruit personnel to run it well knowing 95% of teams they will face are uncomfortable playing against it. Some coaches, like you said, use it to mask defensive deficiencies.

Coaches like Boeheim aren't using it to mask deficiencies. They are using it as a weapon. Given his personal success as coach, I'd say when used correctly, it can lead to team success.
