We know now that Mike Hamilton said that he views assistant coaches as a line item cost. That means that Dooley can do whatever he wants with the amount of money Lane was spending on his assistants.

Chattanooga Times Free Press | Vols continue search for new coaches

$3.325M salary for assistants likely highest in college football GoVolsXtra

That should give us an idea of how much money they still have to pay the new staff members. I am disheartened that Willie Mack is leaving, but I like the hires Dooley has made so far.

We need strong recruiting in Texas, LA, MS, AL, FL, GA, SC, NC, VA and KY and OH would not hurt.

Jim Chaney has a good reputation in Big 10 country and can get us into places in Illinois etc.

Coach Thompson has great connections in GA and AL.

I do not know specifically where all the members of the current staff are strongest, I know that WMG was covering Texas for us, and Wilson was primarily MS and LA, and

As crazy as it might sound, Dooley is I think going to be a better recruiter in the South than Kiffin. He does not have the recruiting staff that Kiffin did, but he can go in and talk to coaches (see the KNS interview with the Hialeah coach) and mommas and convince them he will take care of their guys and prepare them for success. He is also unlikely to insult entire towns.

1. Head Coach Derek Dooley
2. Offensive Coordinator /QBs Jim Chaney
3. Defensive Coordinator ????
4. Terry Joseph was DB coach and Recruiting Coord at La Tech
5. Wide Receivers Coach is Charlie Baggett which is an upgrade on Kippy. It should give us all hope that a great staff will be put together.
6. Lance Thompson Linebackers
7. Quarterbacks Coach ???? or does Chaney do it?
8. Offensive Line Coach ????
9. Eric Russell was special teams coach at Texas Tech
10. Defensive Line Coach ????
2 GAs, I do not know anything about what they are doing other than I hope we keep Inky J.

Will anyone get the coveted Assistant Head Coach designation?

Who will be the recruiting coordinator?

We have 4 slots left. Who would you like to see?

New reports on OL coach say that Searels is not leaving UGA. Art Kehoe is still in play for that position.

Who do you want?

I think you see Joe Berry hired as the DC. I'm still not sure if I like that, but if Dooley likes him then so be it. I would almost rather promote Lance Thompson, but I'm not the coach.

Charlie Baggett is already Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers

I think Thompson could get the Recruiting Coordinator tag if someone else isn't brought in for it - and at this juncture that is highly unlikely.

Also, Thompson could be moved to DL depending on the specialty of the DC.

Terry Joseph will cover Louisiana

Eric Russell (from Texas Tech) will cover Texas

I could definitely see this happening if Joe Barry is hired since his specialty is LB. I would like to see LT get the recruiting coordinator position, but I think Joseph could be given that position since he held it at La. Tech.

I agree. I think that LT is the man for RC. Joseph would be a mistake as RC but I trust him in LA area.

I think Joseph handling the secondary by himself is enough.. he doesn't need RC on top of it.

Didnt you already start a thread like this?

Do you know how to edit or just trying to get your post count higher?

What about running backs? I hear Bisaccia is still interested in Tennessee. I would rather he come and coach RB/ST than having Russell.

Is anybody else a little surprised that it has been a week and the staff still has some real big holes in it? I think the Steele thing really hurt us (I think they was sure they would get him).

Not really. It is a bad time to try and hire a new staff. Dooley is having to spend a majority of his time recruiting right now. Plus, a lot of coaches are not wanting to leave their team right now. After NSD, he can finish putting together his staff.

I agree. I think the fact that Steele said yes and then said no was tough.

And it is very hard to recruit for both coaches and players with such a short period of time.

Agree completely. Recruiting timeline has a hard deadline. I'd rather see him going after the guy who will be on the field next year first, then the guy who will be standing on the sideline.

so far i like the looks of the staff. with some great hires at the open positions we could be pretty strong.

Recruiting is dead without coaches. Poor strategy to focus on recruiting first. Maybe we should have taken more time on the HC selection since we are not going to benefit in recruiting or even maintain status quo.

Whatever happened to Tommy Spangler coming over from DD old staff? He was waiting for HC but did not get.

Good question. I posted this on another thread this morning:
I like the idea still of Tommy Spangler. He was considered initially but was interviewing for the Tech HC job. Sonny Dykes was hired instead. The LA Tech board shows that the fan base down there loves this guy and really wants him to stay. Here are a few Spangler quotes from the Tech board:

"You gotta gear that s*** up, you gotta be like, VROOM, VROOM, VROOM!"

"Hey Anderson, I hear you broke your scapula? Anderson you know what happened to me in college? I broke both my scapulas! I learned how to tackle with no f***ing ams."

"You guys just can't get the signs right . . . so you know what I'm gonna do! I'm gonna start bringing props out on the field with me! For smoke blitz I'm gonna stand on the sideline with a big fat stogie in my mouth puffing away! For storm blitz I'm gonna bring an umbrella out there and just hold it over my head! Then for dog blitz I'm gonna bring a dog on a leash and just throw his a** out on the field! Then ya'll might get the signs right!"

"Work your balls off, you shouldn't have any balls after this, because you worked them off!"

This guy has the fire and in my humble opinion should be considered as a legitimate candidate for DC. Here is a link to the board where I got the info:
