Film Study: Who starts at quarterback for Tennessee?

JG had good stats with a bad OL, showed progress in every game and his TD/INT ratio was low enough to show this kid can play. Never played QB in college (played CB) but seeing his progression in reads in the O&W game leads me to believe he's matured so much in all aspects of the game he understands reads and knows what the D is doing.

One thing DB's feed off is the QB's eyes and body motion to be able to sniff out a dead route and to center on the correct route and watching JG in the spring game he has learned to read the D and focus on the open man. Still needs work on reading the DE's rushes but has come light years from his first game. This kid can play and I would hate to see him transfer to become a great QB for someone else.

The QB competition is going to be intense but JG will shine. If I'm wrong then I will apologize for my analysis. This kid has it!!!!!!!!!! I may be wrong but only on Saturdays when I'm rooting Phil on on the golf course.:)

Stop having an agenda and open your eyes as theres many here who hate the thought og JG being the starting QB for TN this year and are looking for anyone other than this kid to lead us. Personally I'd love to know their background in CFB before I even valued their opinion. I rem a long time ago I played pee wee ball, but then I grew up and played college football, open your eyes and see the play infront of you but then again you never had to break film down you just drank beer and cussed at the TV!

Pretty good write-up here. I would love for JG to start heck he has 3 years to play and if he progresses in the read department and makes great decisions I am all for him (the kid can sling the ball).

I noticed in the spring game the coaches have allowed him the ability to create plays with his legs, it seemed like last year Butch told him not to run with the ball at all and stay in the pocket for forever. Sometimes that just isn't an option and you have to get out of there. I saw that in JG during the spring game and I liked it.

With an improved offensive line JG could definitely do some great things. I'm definitely pulling for him over Chryst I just hope he makes that jump or connection to be able to surpass Chryst.

I agree with everything you said. This kid is a baller. Ive made numerous reads off of good solid QB's in college and I have an insight into how a QB goes through his reads and the difference from last year to this year is JG is making the right reads. Kid finds a way to get to ball into the open hands which mean he's looking the entire field over and finding the open man. Sometimes 5 year SR's don't learn this. JG has done this in less time and if you watch him he scans the field when given time. The key is OL play. If they give this kid time he will eat defenses alive. He had a learning curve to deal with the last year and by the end of the season his number were as good as any in the country. The ceiling is high on this kid and KC will be playing back up in MHO.

The reads this kid made in the O&W game has me happy he's at the helm. I don't know much but you feed off the QB's and this kid is a winner. SORRY SO LONG DIDNT READ! Group

I personally feel like JG will be the starter, but another possible outcome is both play regularly. If our offensive line still has kinks in it both may play to throw off defenses as well as rest the qbs if they are getting hit alot during or after the play. Chrysts larger size could absorb more of the hits and he may play more in the games where were getting hit more by bigger guys. Just a thought. You have to also look at this as an insurance policy. If I'm not mistaken I believe all three of our qbs got injured at some point last year and Pruitt probably wants to make sure he has a capable backup to take over and either rest the starter or in an injury situation.

I honestly don't think our QBs are going to get hit very much this year. With the addition of Kennedy who I believe will start at Center. I don't see the pocket collapsing a lot. Will our QBs get hit some of course all QBs do, but I think our O-Line is going to look Night and Day from last year.

I agree. But when chryst was being recruited it didn't look this good imo. But I'd still rather have an insurance policy and not have to use it than what we've had the past few years where every thing falls apart.

Tried to watch, but saw Butch wearing orange and got physically sick to my stomach.

The cons are why JG starts.

Chryst makes bad decisions and forces balls. Not super accurate. Not good without Heisman help.

JG's cons were basically freshman mistakes and bad body language early in the season.

Pruitt won't play a qb who forces a bunch of bad passes.

Agree 100%. My concern with JG, though, is that he holds the ball too long. Did it last season, did it in the spring game. He won't make it through an entire season if he doesn't improve in that area.

With the many issues concerning the offensive line, I find the QB battle a minor concern. If they can't adequately protect the pocket, this won't matter much.

JG is the undisputed leader going into fall camp. Chryst will get a shot if JG falters in the first game of the season.

I do think the media is underrating our situation at QB. And JG is much better than people realize if we can ever give him a clean pocket. That's my biggest source of optimism about this season. Whether it's JG or Chryst, we'll be better than expected at QB.

My biggest source of pessimism is that I still think we're world's away from getting either of them a "clean pocket". And even if our O-line is better than expected at the beginning of the season, what happens if we have injuries (as we inevitably will). That 2nd team O-line at the spring game looked horrendous.

That said, at least Helton will be better at scheming around our strengths and weaknesses than Butch. Still, the thing that annoyed me the most about Butch was not the cliches, but rather, his complete inability to adapt to his players' skill-sets. He always had this mindset that "we have to run the system" even when it was clear to everyone watching the game that "the system" wasn't working.

You've got to remember the first team ol from the spring will be second team come fall. In the spring game we didn't have Smith, Hall, Kennedy, or J Johnson. 4 probable starters.

Doubt Johnson starts. If healthy, Hall fits in somewhere. But he’s not a lock to be healthy.

100% agree. First and second team should be much better on both sides of the ball come fall. There's what 30 or so people that were not here in the spring that will be here in the fall and many of them have a chance to start or be second team so both groups should improve.

If he's any good I think he has a chance to lock down one of the guard spots.

Problem with Johnson is he hasn’t been in a strength and conditioning program worth a damn yet. He was around 270 pounds when he got to campus. He’s gonna have to have a hell of a summer to get his weight and strength where it needs to be.

Good thing is he’s got 3 years to make an impact.
