Fiddle/Violin, Anyone?

Anyone play? I've never played one but I'm wanting to learn.

What would be a good one for a beginner?

I'd like to try a mandolin also. Matter of fact, now that you mentioned mandolin, I got my instrumens confused in my OP. A and F are mandolins. Gotta correct that right now.

I like how fiddle players always (almost always) do the those strokes at the beginning (counting in?) that sounds like they are getting the fiddle started.

Try the dulcimer. You can get a good one for less than $400 and teach yourself how to play pretty easily.

I love that sound and if there is one being played, its a great watch, also.

or on a tabletop. I'd recommend a trip to Warren May's shop in Berea, KY. If you want a dulcimer, you want one of his.

I googled them earlier. Said the viola has a deeper tone. Never knew the difference.

$350 to well over $6k. But the players say the difference is all in the bow.

One nice thing about instruments is once you own one, the cost of the hobby is quite low (compared to other ones). Unless you are paying for lessons and the like.
