Look at how we've won. Overtime fumble recovery App State. Down to the last 8 minutes of the game with Ohio. Needed VT to have fumblitus to pull of the win. Hail Mary to defeat GA.
Are there going to be games that a team plays poorly in? Sure. Are they going to play down to their competition occasionally? Yep. But what we have seen all season is an unprepared team that doesn't do well at the basics. We had a log of luck to not have five loses at the moment instead of three.
Player development, and game-day readiness, has been consistently poor throughout this season, and no matter how you try to cut it, that is 100% on coaching.
The East is in shambles this year, and is only going to improve next year, and if we see the same half-games next year, we'll not squeak by with as many wins.
Sure, even though we've been the most injured team in the SEC by a long shot, I'm not gonna say we've looked good this year. We have played consistently bad in games- particularly in the first half! We've played down to some weaker opponents- granted they are strong for their respective conferences but weak nonetheless.
Do I think Butch needs to make some personnel changes? He!! yeah I do! We can start with the OL coach, then the OC and then the S&C coach. We will have a lot of new leaders next year and a new AD. You don't just clean house and fire the whole staff. That would control + alt + delete the whole program back to square one.
I think the East is getting better as a whole. The East actually won the West matchups more this year which doesn't happen often. I think Smart has underperformed so far given the talent Richt left him and the recruiting class he brought in. McElwain again I think is in for a rude awakening (see: Muschamp). Neither one inherited a Dooley of a football team when they got there.
But were does that leave Butch for next year? That's really all that matters and I honestly don't know. Haven't really thought about it to be honest with you. As a coach, I don't know if he's the stepping stone to greatness or a coach for the record books himself. As for next year's team, I don't know if QD is as great as I think he could be at opening up the passing game. Or if John Kelly and our running backs can run thru this line that returns mostly intact. Idk if the injuries that have given like 90% of our roster some valuable game experience will pay off or not. Idk if Rain Man Shoop stays and our defense finally clicks or if he's buying some prime real estate in Delaware right now. In all likelihood if we don't change our S&C coach, this team in week one will look completely different by week 8.
But I know Lyle has succeeded a little bit more every year and for that he deserves a shot at running his program. Could I change my mind in 3 years? Yeah not because I was wrong NOW but because I have a brain! And right now even my average brain knows that when a coach improves his win total every year then that means I have to be a little patient. He'll be evaluated every year like all top programs evaluate their coaches. If you look at the top 10 programs in the country they all have had consecutive years of 8-10 wins at some point in the last 15-20 years. Some programs like UT have historically had to be patient. If every fanbase were as impatient there would be an NCAA Coaching Red Rover every year after the National Championship. That would be a mess. Butch isn't going anywhere for now as in the next 2-3 years unless something major happens. You can either be ok with that or you can start hoping that he loses so you can be right.
