We weren't just the best team in the SEC from 1933-51, we were the best team in College Football.History is nice to have but it has to be recent.
Minnesota has 3-4 National Titles but no one remembers that.
Tennessee's best run was Neyland. We were BY FAR the most dominate SEC program from 1933-1951. It wasn't close. Since 1951, we have had major spurts of success but nothing as sustained as Neyland. Nothing like the Bear Bryant or Saban runs at Alabama.
Neyland also lived so far back that we probably don't get as much credit as we deserve for National Titles, etc.
We had a great run in the late Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer era but even during that run we had a losing record to Florida and only won 5 Conference Titles (85, 89, 90, 97, and 98) and 1 National Title. Compare that to Alabama's run right now or Georgia with Mark Richt and Kirby Smart and we really are not that strong.
The fact is we went 15 years in the desert and most people remember that now about Tennessee football and not the successes of the past. Let's just focus on what Heupel is building and not worry about the past because the recent past is NOT good for Tennessee.

You are right that the last dozen years are nothing to write home about in particular but as bad as those years were, we've still won 525 games since 1952, good enough for 16th in that time period.

The key is we may have woken up at exactly the right time, to keep Georgia and LSU from passing us (or pass Southern Cal back, which we did yesterday) to stay Top 10 all time.

And let's not forget we had the most wins in CFB from Neyland's first year to our last SEC championship game appearance. That's a not insignificant period of 82 seasons.
