Face mask vs participation without a helmet?

I saw the exact same thing happen in the Alabama auburn game last night. Alabama player had his helmet knocked off and he continued to play. Surprise, surprise, no flag whatsoever

Participation without a helmet wasn’t called on Taylor. It was called on a DL. Butler maybe, can’t remember who.

I saw that too. Not sure who it was, but there was a Vol player trailing the play without a helmet and since he was still trying to block or participate in the play, they called the penalty. It wasn't on Taylor without a helmet.

Yeah. #94 had his helmet off and was attempting to participate in the play. The penalty wasn't on Taylor.

Was 94 IIRC. My question was why the Vandy lineman wasn’t penalized for illegal hands to the face when he knocked 94’s helmet off? I don’t recall 94 engaging with anyone after losing his helm, just sort of ran in the ball carries direction like he would naturally do. Seemed like a completely bogus call to me.

Sorry I believe it was Vaughn that about twisted his head off.

MOST ridiculous crapola (Keeping it clean here) I've EVER seen. How the hell do you NOT participate without a helmet when you get it ripped off your head?? Asinine; Yes. Preposterous. OK. Upon further review, I see there was another UT player without a helmet. WTH??

Unfortunately wouldn't have mattered. If the offense commits 5 penalties on one play, all called, and the defense gets called for anything, then it all offsets and they do the down over.

Yes!!!! I was screaming that at the tv and cursing the refs.... but then I remembered they were sec refs. My Momma taught me not to act like that towards handicapped folks.

Was definitely Butler, he talked about it on the post-game locker room show. Said that his helmet was ripped off, but he saw the ball on the ground and instinctively went after it, but said that you can’t do that when your helmet is ripped off and he wasn’t aware of the rule. Said he got over to the sideline and the coaches told him about that rule, he just didn’t know it existed.
Now, that said, I wasnt aware of the rule either, but it makes sense from a player safety standpoint.

RB should have been hit with a targeting or some other non-offsetting penalty. He intended to rip the helmet off from the time he started getting tackled. Classless play. Things were really chippy all night tho. Glad we whipped their tails

Along these lines.... Has anyone noticed how often players "lose" their helmets this year? Seems to be a whole lot more than in years past. Looks like they need to "beef" up the way helmets are held on to the head.

It's actually down... It was so bad a few years back they made that rule you had to sit out a play if your helmet came off. They were wearing em loose back then.

The most ridiculous call was the PI called on us when the Vandy WR pulled our defender by the face mask throughout the entire route.

You're probably right. It just seems to me that it is happening more than the last few years. I remember the time you speak of. I wonder why a better "strap" system hasn't been devised. Your thoughts?

Don't really have any. I'm sure with certain pressures they're designed to come off to prevent damage to the neck and throat. Better the helmet come of in some cases than a neck get broken as it's twisted and pulled? There's probably a fine line there somewhere.

Mr Saban said it wasnt a penalty so no flag was thrown.

There are good strap systems but when players don't tighten them down, the best system still won't keep a helmet on.
