On the eve of NSD we should consider how much importance we put on this thing called recruiting. Lets look back to 2007 when we had what was considered widely the best recruiting class in college football that year.

5 five star recruits
11 four star recruits
15 three star recruits

Sounds great but lets take a closer look.

Five star
Eric Berry - amazing talent, future all pro
Chris Donald - still waiting to find his place
Ben Martin - loads of potential
Kenny O'neil - nothing
Brent Vinson - wasted talent

Four star
BJ Coleman - average qb
Lennon Creer - underappreciated by former staff
Gerald Jones - team leader
Donald Langley - nothing to write home about
Nevin Mckenzie - very little contribution
Rolando Melancon - Flame Out
Ahmad Paige - not much yet
Darris Sawtelle - Who?
Rae Sykes - we will see

Three Star
Anthony Anderson - special teams so far
Deshaun Barnes - Nope
William Brimfield - potential is there
Todd Cambell - non factor
Kevin Cooper - average fb
Art Evans - will play at db
CJ Fleming - to early to tell
Savion Frazier - all SEC potential
Josh Hawkins - Special teams
Tyler Maples - Overmatched
Denarious Moore - will get plenty of pt at wr
Cody Pope - lmao
Dennis Rogan - game breaker
Daryl Vereen - switched to multiple positions

The point is these are 18 year old kids. Some excel. Some burnout. Some fade away. But each year we hold our breaths hoping that the much needed 5 star DE will pick the big orange. Ben Rothliesberger was not a starter until his senior year of HS. He was a 2 star prospect. James Banks was a 5 star stud. Get my point.

true...but i don't know about your assessment
nevin mckenzie was solid last year...not sure why you say he had very little contribution.

I believe, and I think that alot of people here will agree, that while this class will hopefully all pan out so that EVERYONE becomes a contributor, we all know that wont happen. This class is more of a statement for the future of VOL football. Sure we may get Marlon Brown and he fails, doubt it, but the point is, we got him, Tennessee. And that will tell alot of future players that UT is the place to come if you want to get a chance to succeed.

Anyone catch my drift?

I think the former staff was hung up on playing the Jr's and Sr's, not the best. I believe under Coach Kiffin, everyone will have a chance. Whomever pushes themselves the most during the off season has a chance. This makes the over all body of work preform at a higher level.

Genius post, bro......don't agree with Nevin assessment.....otherwise, it puts everything into perspective.........

so many BUSTS, BUSTS, BUSTS.........drugs, grades, injuries, losers, wussies, jerks, rebels, and suckers out there.......and a bunch of STARS is all that counts???
Gimme a friggin' break.........we are gonna do GREAT.....half of PHoolmer's players never even saw the field, let's get real.........:eek:lol:

I think Coleman may still be a very good QB.

Sawtelle is coming off double shoulder surgery. He may never make it back... or he may be an All-American type of player.

Other than that... one of the things that did CPF in was that he developed a knack for finded talented players who were head cases or had character flaws. Maybe he thought he could fix them?
