I understand that with a new coaching staff takes time to learn the new playbook. That being said It was also said that new staff was a major upgrade from the last. This article shows the team coming into the 2017 season as the 19th best team in the nation. With a major upgrade with the coaching staff and that much talent why is Tennessee such underdogs with sports analysts across the country. Yes I know it’s 2017, but the talent is still there in 2018 along with a few more pieces added.

Because you have no idea if it’s an actual coaching staff upgrade. Any expectations, good or bad, are based on hope and/or wild guesses. Sure, there have been plenty of great coordinators who went on to immediate success as a head coach, but there are also a ton who were terrible... nobody knows. And when there are huge unknowns, people aren’t fast to start calling them a favorite each week.

The good news is, we’ll start finding out answers very soon.

No expectations until I see some of the game. You can have people speculate all day but the story will be told on the field. We should be able to score on W Va and how much the defense can hold them to is the determining factor.

Remember when Sal Sunseri came from Bama and overhauled the defense, switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4? Remember how excited and optimistic we all were going into that season? Yeah.

Remember when Butch went out and got Bob Shoop and we all thought he was the biggest "can't miss" hire in the program's history? Uh-huh.

We'll find out today what we have, but don't be surprised if the "experts" turn out to be right -- no matter how much we don't want them to be.

I think they're looking at the end of last season instead of the pre-season predictions.

We just need to take care of business.

My expectations:

I just want to see a physical defense with no hesitation, competent coaching decisions in specific down/distance scenarios with good clock management, and 100% effort for 60 minutes, no matter what the score.

Pretty sad how low my expectations are, but that’s how low our program has been the last 12 months.

Seeing what these guys have been doing in practice and having it all translate over to the field. A lot of teams struggle to bring it all together for 60 minutes a week. The good teams find ways for all 3 phases of the game to play as unit every game, can all three phases play as a unit is what I want to see.

My expectations are the Vols will have the growing pains as expected but won't be a Jabroni team that describes most of the awful 2017 Season.
6 wins possibly 7 and a Bowl game are my expectations for this team with the 1st year New Head Coach.
I'm choosing to be optimistic except not Rose Colored Orange Glasses the Vols are going to be a Great team with the 1st year with the new Head Coach.

A team that is in the top 10 during and after the regular season, a team that plays in the SEC Championship game, and a team that is in the 4 teams Playoffs. For me that is my criteria of what would be a great season for the Bright Orange Vols.

The Vols have a challenging schedule including Georgia, Florida, the Usual Juggernaut Crimson Tide with the Brilliant Mastermind that is the Outstanding Nick Saban, etc.
If I'm wrong and the Vols are a top 10 team, and win more than 7 games I'll happily say that I was wrong the Vols did better than my predicted expectations of 6 or 7 wins and a Bowl game.

I don't understand how people reach this conclusion. They might be a major upgrade but there is a ton of questions to be answered in regards to the staff. Questions which will not be answered until they have coached some games.

How will Pruitt do making decisions as a head coach? No history whatsoever.

How will Helton do as a coordinator on his own and not sharing with others? No history there.

How will the defensive staff handle working together? Two co-defensive coordinators who will not be handling the defensive calls after doing prep all week? How will dynamic play out??

How will this staff, as a new staff working together, click in getting the systems implemented? Are they all speaking the same message when communicating with players?

Each coach has new assignments on game day than they had with previous staffs. Different expectations from their boss than previous bosses? Will that dynamic work.

Those are a few questions that must be answered as a staff that cannot be graded until they have games under their belt. Until then, how can anyone decide its an upgrade?

I'm not saying they won't be an upgrade and damn well hope they are. But performance will decide if an upgrade or not..

If they are not an upgrade over the previous staff, we are in serious trouble.

Im with the radio host in Chatt this morning: 2 years ago we were making injury excuses and saying we cant use the excuse about the lack of talent... now all of a sudden we dont have the talent to win bigger games.

high school talent (even 4 and 5 stars) have to be developed. We lack talent due to this roster not being developed by previous staff.

Which is exactly why some of us have continued to say this season will be rough. Get to 6 wins and this year is a huge success.
