it’s hard to wrap my head around a 76-team tournament. Obviously it may lead to a few first-time-ever participants which is great fun for those teams and their supporters, And it may save some coaches’ jobs as well as lead to introducing a new batch of potential candidates to move up in the coaching ranks. The tv ratings and economic impact numbers could be interesting, too.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out. I agree with those who think the 76-team format pretty much guarantees Tennessee’s tournament streak continues. I don’t think we have anything to worry about as far as that goes.

Expansion 68 to 76 teams 8 more teams.
Are those 8 going to be the best available, or is this tied to more guaranteed spots for non-P4 conferences? If the former, it increases the chances of any P4 school, and thus improves the likelihood of Tennessee continuing their streak. If the latter, then no effect.

Increasing by eight teams certainly increases the Power 4 getting at least one more team each in the tourney. Since it is already like 8 now more than half a league will play in the tourney. If you miss at 76 you are just a terrible team.

32 automatic qualifiers
44 at large selections

Open round replaces the old first 4 with a 12 game opening round..
including 24 teams
12 lowest automatic
12 lowest at large selections

No crossing over
Automatic play automatic selections teams
at large play at large selection Teams.

artificial intelligent browser

76 teams - 24 teams= 52 teams who get a first round bye
This last two lines Mudcat figuring ...

First round March17 Wednesday March 18 Thursday
Games at 12 campus sites

I take issue with that last sentence. 76 teams is only 21% of 363 Division I teams with women's basketball. Around 30% more will have a winning record but still miss the tournament. It's hard to call a team with a winning record "terrible."...maybe mediocre, average, so-so, whatever.

Just looking at the schedule I think 21 wins should be the low and 26 or 27 the high. We really have the schedule to win in the mid 20's once I see who those two games that we don't know the opponent will have a better determination of wins we should be able to achieve.

Yes I can upgrade to your assessment. I guess a winning record even with a losing conference record would still make you mediocre at least.

BYU women's basketball 26-12
9-9 in their conference
lost in the final WNIT
Teams like the cougars deserved
To make the NCAA tournament
Seen BYU against Missouri second WNIT
going off that game
BYU should have made it.
similar record this year they will...

So not studying lady Vols roster too much
Do think think Tennessee is one of 32 of 44 at large selections who get a bye
Or is the volunteers one of 12 at Large teams going to be playing in the first round?

An outsiders view:

So, I look on this as being 5 Extreme Optimists ( with 12 super optimists) and 10 Extreme Nega Vols (with 17 more depressed Vols

The vast majority ( 62.7%) I look at as Reasonable Vols who expect a win or two ( maybe 3 given the tournament expansion) come tournament time.

I hope her knees hold up this season she is a star player and one we need to give us big games this coming season. I'm probably to optimistic about this team, but really liking what I have seen thus far this season. We have far more players that can score efficiently from the field and at the line this coming season than we had last year. If they can manage to play decent defense we are going to have a great season.

…ya left out the tier between Extreme Negas and depressed that self identify as “realists”.

Looks like we can actually hit layups this year too

Last thoughts on expected SEC order of finish:

1: Has to be SC until someone knocks them off
2-5: I expect VD, LSU, Ky and Texas to battle it out for these slots, will be close and come to tiebreakers imo
6-8: UT, OM and OK likely candidates, in any order
* Team that could surprise and rise to the 6-8 slots is MSU. Though it’s a long shot.
** SEC should get 9 NCAA invites imo., outside shot at 10 with new format.

All I needed to see.
This team will compete for a top 4 spot in the SEC.
With a veteran experienced team, I don’t care who the opponent is playing Tennessee in Knoxville this season is going to be a nightmare.

The Post play will be better this season. Craft, Janneh, Moore, Minus, and Makalusky are excellent fits to the system. Peterson gives them some depth too.
The PGs understand how to run an offense and have Power 4 experience as starters. Flauntleroy played on the #1 HS team in the nation. She is not seeing any level of competition that she hasn’t already and has far more talent around her than in her collegiate career. Both Flauntleroy & Eads are former Big East Freshman of the Year honorees.
Kaylene Smikle will be one of the best players in the SEC. She has averaged over 20 ppg in prior head to head matchups against SEC teams in recent years. Looks healthy and very efficient as an athletic guard w/ great size.
Tennessee has outstanding depth this season. The depth will be the key.

Ya know, I’m excited to see if Missouri can sneak into the top 8. Kellie reaaaaallly likes how things are going so far with her team, and especially their competitiveness, so they could surprise everyone. The caveat is that finishing top 8 in the league may require they go an entire season without losing key players to injury and, bless her heart, Kellie’s teams are usually not that lucky. I hope to see a completely healthy Harper team just once before I die! 🥹
