Deep breath........ok you might just want to quick scan because this is long.

Despite our injury woes, I think people have gotten a bit worried about Florida so far this year because of their impressive first two games. We all know that they don't schedule too much before they play us and this year is no different. These two teams were bowl teams last year, but that was last year. To give you an idea of where these teams ranked last year stat-wise, considering the conferences they're in.....

Southern Miss was 95th in rushing offense and 33rd in passing offense last year. They had a new starting quarterback and runningback in the first game of the year in the Swamp last week.

Southern Miss finished 73rd in rush defense and 75th in pass defense last year. They only return 6 starters on defense, 2 in the secondary and 2 on the line. The other 2 aren't even 1st on the depth chart this year. Southern Miss might have been a bowl team, but they were also a very average team. Florida didn't do much offensively until late in the game.

Central Florida had their magical season last year after going without winning a game the year before. Everyone got excited for them, they were a Cinderella story, but that's dead now. They had an adequate offense last year and return a few starters, but they play in the Conference USA. They were in the mid 30's in both rushing and passing offensively last year.

Defensively they were 88th against the rush and 81st against the pass. That isn't any good, even if you do return 10 starters on defense. You're playing in the Swamp and Florida is a good team with a gimmick offense. They were winless the year before, just one year removed. Remember how quickly we got written off for one bad year? They got praise for one good year......what's more likely? Us really being bad or central florida really being good? haha

Florida does the same thing every year. They play great the first few games while we play a game and usually have a bye. Yes we're injured, yes we're thin, but we're 2-0 and despite our defensive lapses yesterday, our offense hasn't looked this good in a long, long time. The only question is our running game. The counter-positive to that is Florida's questionable secondary. If we exploited Cal's inexperience and then Air Force, Florida isn't any different.

FLORIDA BREAKDOWN

In these two games against these two teams, they've had a true frehsmen WIDE RECEIVER lead them in rushing in the 1st game and a TRUE FRESHMAN quarterback lead them in rushing in the 2nd game. 7 or 8 people get carries because of their style of offense. They don't have any runningbacks that can carry the workload because they're not very good. But about these "option" plays, did they work last year? NO. They'll make their plays and get their yards, but this isn't the flexbone we're playing.

On the defensive line, losing Harrell will be big. We have the talent there and moving Turk back inside will be nice. No one can replace harrell, but we have talent on the line and with JT Mapu steadily getting himself back up to speed and with Walter Fisher coming back, we'll be fine for the year as long as the improvement continues. It always does on the d-line.

Demetrice Morley is a big key. There is no reason why they don't stick him and keep him at corner. We aren't necessarily going to see what we have in the secondary against florida because they're a bit different than everyone else we're going to see for a few weeks and overall. But we have Marshall and Memphis following......We can have everyone back there and they'll get their plays here and there. Morley is as good a tackler as anyone in our secondary and has the speed to keep up with anyone on Florida's receiving corps. Tackling will be as important as anything this week. They need to keep the continuity going with Hefney and Stewart at safety. Jonathan Wade is easily one of the best corners in the SEC and we won't have to worry about him.

Florida's defense hasn't been tested. Their secondary suffered their own loss when Avery Atkins became absent from the football team. They are left with just ONE starter in the secondary. Their front 7 is tough, but is it THAT much better than Cal's?

People are knocking Cal and they looked weak against us, but the talent is still there. Look how bad we looked yesterday. Does that mean we're that bad? Does that mean Air Force has a better offense than Cal? No. Cal showed up in week 2 like they were supposed to. I'm not as worried about Florida's front 7 as I was Cal's. It's all relative now considering the beatdown we put on them, but nevertheless. I am, however, scared of Brandon Siler......eeeewwww....he's good. haha

....................................................

The bottom line is this:

At worst(unless something really really bad/drastic happens), we're going to be 4-1 heading into the Georgia game. Yes that still means we're probably out of the SEC East race, but in all honesty, I didn't fully expect to be in the race to begin with. Sure I'd love to go 10-2 and win the East. But if we go 9-3, then i'm going to be okay with that. If we lose to Florida, we have 2 weeks to get our d-line up to speed and worked out and we have 2 weeks to get Morley and the rest of the secondary settled in. We've had injuries like this before, at least they're on defense where The Chief is working on it instead of the offense where we're finally clicking like we need to be.

Everyone just sit back, calm down, and take a break from the madness. We're 2-0 and Florida is as scared of Tennessee with what we've done offensively as Tennessee is scared of what might happen due to these injuries. We're the dog, that's how we like it.

Wow you're right, that was long. Good post though, I tend to agree with you.

Sure I'd love to go 10-2 and win the East. But if we go 9-3, then i'm going to be okay with that.

that may be acceptable to you and Fulmer but it isnt to me. We should be a serious contender for the East every year. You're basically writing us off before playing anybody in our division. AND you're ok with it. That's my only beef with what you posted.

Most of the concern is the lack of depth on the DL, OL and secondary. Theirs been several key injures. UT is going into the game a little beat up, thats the concern.

D-Line is a worry, but im not to sure that FL offensive line is real great so that my help us out since we do not have any depth there. IF we can get our running game goin and fly to the football like we did in the CAL game it should be a fun game to watch for us VOL fans

maybe they shouldn't have let you stay haystak lover!!!!! hahahaha i knew you'd chime in with your negativity. you should go recruit your buddy Small Mike to come on here and spread his hate seed. hahaha (Mods, this is just a joke, we know each other).

Considering that YOU and most everyone else had written us off before the season even started, I'd like to think that 10-2 or 9-3 is acceptable beings the SEC East winner in the past 3 years has ended the season with 3 losses. Sure we won it with only 1 SEC loss in 2004, but we're talking overall record here. Sure we want to beat our rivals, but if we ran through the SEC undefeated, but lost to Cal, Memphis, and Marshall, would that be a success? Assuming we lost the SEC Championship game?

We have a brutal schedul and it has become that much tougher with these injuries. We've already defeated a Top 10 team and we have 3 more that we have to play. We're playing 4 Top 10 teams this year and possibly 5 if we make it to the SEC Championship game. I think if we lose 2-3 games, all things considered, this season will be a success as far as rebuilding. You have already seen the effect it has had on recruiting just by winning one game against Cal, the respect around the country, GameDay coming back to Knoxville, etc etc. Cutcliffe was on ESPN talking about Eli Manning calling him last year asking him for help. Cut told him his mechanics were way off and Eli fixed it and played better. That's free exposure.

I'm usually big on numbers. I love stats and the information you can generate from it. I broke down the Cal game to find out that the avg rushing D they faced last year was in the 70's if I remember correctly, and came tot he conclusion that they were not as good as advertised.

There are exceptions to all rules and this is one: WHEN TENNESSEE AND FLORIDA play all the stats, what happened last year, who's played who goes out the window.

Tennessee Florida is balls to the walls and when the teams are like they are this year it's usually decided within a touchdown. So for huge games like this stats don't do any justice. I look at the players and coaches. For instance in 98' Al Wilson he wouldn't let Tennessee lose. This game is won by the school with the hardest nosed players and the ones that refuse to lose.

I usually do a breakdown just like you did of all the rush D, pass D, and so on but this week I'm not because It's Tennessee Florida baby we know what were facing, we know whats up. No need for numbers. The only number I care about this week is our point total being higher than theirs.

How would being 4-1 going into UGA game put us out of the SEC race? That doesn't make sense to me.

Also, people forgetting about Mapu, Fisher, Turk, Bolden, Matt. M and others on the D line. We have plenty of big talented D linemen ready to step up and play against UF. Yes Harrell was the best on the squad but he’s gone, it sucks, but its time to suck it up and play through it. I've seen lesser D tackle accomplish more out of pure technique and will.

As far as the secondary goes we should be fine with Morley rolling down to CB and Hefney opposite him. All this means is we will have to play a little more zone to prevent putting him on an Island against a talented UF wr corps. But remember these guys were playing against the UT receiving squad all summer and fall. If they can cover our WR's with efficiency they can cover Florida’s.

If the offense keeps on producing we should win a close one.:)

I think one major difference that has to happen this year is that our offense (which is finally hitting on all cylinders again) is going to have to carry/support our young and dinged-up defense.

As long as Ainge and company can keep kickin butt and taking names, our D will have room to breath, less pressure, and plenty of time to step up and make things happen.

You can definitely see the pendulum swinging toward the offense to lead the team.

Agree I would hope we use some 3-4 on D. force Fla to run and do things they arent ready for on O. This would take some pressure off our D line and add a twist keeping Fls's O off balance.

you never know, chavis might stand up the d-line like he did in 2001. let them roam around and move around so much that they don't know what's going on. i think it'd be a good idea beings we have tackles at end and ends at tackle. with their offense, it might actually be beneficial from time to time to not be "in position" on the d-line. they play the angles, so should be. i agree with mixing in some 3-4 in there. sounds good.

being 4-1 heading into the uga game "could" put us out of the sec east race. i could have been more specific and mention how it's highly unlikely that we finish with just 1 loss and how that would mean florida has to lose two even if we ran the table. the odds of all of that happening are very very slim, but you never know. we don't have the benefit of only having 1 other challenger in our division like the west, we have 2.

It thought the Vols were very effective with 3 down linemen against Cal which is similar to UF in their sets. I'd look for a good bit of it. UF's line is new and kind of reminds me of UT over the past several years... they're playing heavy.

OTOH, while Harrell is a huge loss, the cupboard isn't bare. They recruit DT well and those guys just have to step up a little faster now. Mapu was an all SEC type performer as a Soph and must return to form. Walter Fisther could be the X factor and if as good as his billing may be just what the doctor ordered for this bit of misfortune.

The secondary is now a concern IMO. It started out a definite strength but two injuries later... The coaches are probably going to need to make some personnel adjustments. I hate to see Rogers miss a shot on offense but he seems to be a possibility.

I wonder if Myers-White could be moved back to safety again?

This weekend will definitely be a test more so than just about any other this year. Leak is smart and he'll find whoever is weak. We'll need to have max pressure and a great day against their rebuilt o-line. The more physical UT's guys are against them the better since they are so thin. I think success or failure may hinge on fractions of a second... in the amount of time Ainge gets to throw.

myers-white gained a good bit of weight in the offseason to get ready to play linebacker. i bet he still has the insticts at safety, but he may have lost some speed. situations such as this are why sometimes you just need to leave people where they are supposed to be. granted they're usually pretty good at moving people around, by evidence is that we don't have an actual "safety" playing safety beings both hefney and stewart were corners.

they could move montario hardesty to cornerback. haha
