The goal today was to honor Neyland on his 100th anniversary of his coming to our program. We changed the uniforms and the midfield emblem and there were various conversations honoring our greatest coach.

But something much more significant happened. General Neyland himself guided this game to just show us what our tradition is all about. The kicking game and field positioning was from the core of the General’s playbook. The exceptional punting and defense often placing Auburn deep in their own territory limited their ability to control the game.

The turnovers were back breaking for the Tigers. Our defense was magnificent against Golesh, who we know is an offensive mastermind.

We even ran a stacked offense running the ball that would easily resemble the General’s single wing. Instead of us honoring Neyland, again, he honored us today.

I do not know if anyone else felt it but watching the game I kept feeling the Ghost , or Spirit of Tennessee’s greatest football coach.

Completely agree with everything you posted. General Neyland's defensive prowess was legendary. Everyone should read up on the 1938 Volunteer team. It is amazing to see his fingerprints all over our beloved Volunteers a century after he arrived at the hill. His game maxims are the blueprint and the foundation of our program. The game has changed since his last season roaming the sidelines, but following the maxims will still lead us to victory every time. My favorite quote from him related to football is not even one of the maxims. "Gentlemen, touchdowns follow blocking as sure as night follows day." The man was truly ahead of his time. Also, did I mention, he was a war hero and a servant of our great country. Sure - other schools have had great coaches and leaders, but how many schools can say that they had a General as the cornerstone of their program?

Argument could be made that he is the greatest coach of all time. Could have won a couple more championships if WW2 didn’t happen. He also owned Bear Bryant. Not a lot of coaches can say they had the Bear’s number. His maxims are the backbone of championship cultures.

I have essentially said the same thing to several of my cronies during and after the game! You nailed it!

Prepare to see a lot of defense and run offense the rest of the season. For better or worse.

I have no problem with that. I feel that focusing on a run offense while slowing giving the QB and the OL the experience they need will help us win games.

I don't care how many points we score in a game as long as it is 1 more than what the other team scored.

And we definitely played field position ball which also helps you win games and keep the other team from scoring.
