Evaluating Current Defensive Commits

Current Commits - Defense

Best-case finish - TJ, Crayton/Bryant, Lawson/Hatcher, Ngakoue/Grace, Bell, Gray

In addition to Lawson, Levenberry and/or Toney would be a nice NSD flip.

Durant is a run-stopping, tackling machine, too bad he has academic issues---Prep or JUCO.

OCI...your best case scenario on both sides of the ball adds up to 12 more players...even without Patrick that's 28 total...we'll have to drop minimum 3 players...who are the candidates?

We are not capped by the 25-man signing limit. We can backcount several towards last year. The 85-man scholarship limit is what we have to be concerned with. There will be plenty of roster attrition.

The 85 is an even bigger concern than the 25...if we're going to take 25+ then by my count we have to lose 10+ non-seniors

First look at players that are RS JRs that do not contribute (i.e. Oliver, King, Ayres) as these players will have already graduated.

Second look at true SOs that have been passed on the depth chart by younger players and have no chance to ever contribute (i.e. Smith, Carson). These players can transfer to another D-1 school, redshirt, and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Third look at RS SOs that are unlikely to ever play and may want to transfer to a D-2 school and be eligible immediately (i.e. Pair, Clark, Darr).

Fourth look at players on scholarship with the ability to continue withouta scholarship (i.e. Bullard, Carter, Brewer - MLB).

Fifth look at players leaving early for NFL Draft (i.e. Hunter, Patterson, Bray).

Finally there will be some other unforeseen roster casualties due to transfers, grades, homesickness, legal issues, etc.

I saw this was asked earlier but I haven't seen anybody answer it. OCI, do you know if Omari Phillips will be around next year? It seems like there was some speculation a while back that he wouldn't be.

Solid breakdown. You're at your best with posts like these. Might have to bookmark it because leading up to signing day it will answer a lot of posters questions on this topic.

Taking into account commits and targets likely to commit, what does our class look like in January as early enrollees arrive on campus? What portion of our class will already be here going through spring ball between commits and targets?

Someone may have to help me here but I believe the following are EEs: Green, Harris, Rumph, Toby Johnson, Bradley, Vereen, Zanca and Campbell.

Austin Sanders maybe? Can not remember for sure.

Reeves - Maybin?

Seems like Kendrick was going to try but could not get it done.

Those are the only other possibilities I can think of off the top of my head.

Defensive class looks better on film than paper.

DL: Carr and Ben Bradley are a very good start. Really want to add Crayton and Toby Johnson. The Bryant kid from Florida would be nice too.

LBs: Goeas, Zanca, Vereen, Barnes and Campbell all add some speed and tackling ability to our team. I do like how all of them shed blocks and play downhill. But we still need more LBs with how our current crew is looking. And we need a true impact guy. Carl Lawson is the jewel that we need to steal. Grace is another one that would really help. Levenberry is a hope and a prayer but he could help early. And Yannick is one of my favorite LBs in this class. His power is much needed in our LB crew. We really need to get at least 2 out of those last 4.

DBs: JRM, Miles, and Sutton are all a boost for our secondary. Very good athletes and the two safeties really can bring it in the run game. They all have good size too being over 6'0 tall. We do need another CB and Vonn Bell can hopefully fill that void. He's very versatile as a DB but was said to only measure around 5'10-5'11. He has been very good in 1v1s all summer and should be able to play CB or the Star position with ease. I also think we should take Garland the juco CB in this class if he checks out legally. Kid could help immediately and would put pressure on Coleman, Bonner, D.Gray, and T.Thomas to step up their game and in a hurry.

Defensive class is much stronger than the offensive class so far.

Nice assessment overall...

Vonn Bell is a Safety prospect, he and Miles are the #2 & #13 prospects respectively.
I can see JRM (recruited as an Athlete, and similar to Jason Allen) moving to and playing CB, Marquez White would be a nice flip. Ramsey's not happening but I'm still holding out hope that Mac A. comes full circle.

Critical that we sign one, if not two-three of Grace, Lawson, Levenberry, and Ngakoue. AND one, if not both Crayton and Johnson. Bryant would be nice as well.

JRM won't be a college corner. He will be a head bustin safety or STAR. VB could play both (actually all 3), but may project better at corner. JMO.

Vonn Bell was the best cover man everywhere he went this summer. He measures in at around 5'10 which is a bit small for a safety. He can be a fine CB for us or even better at the star.

JRM can't play CB but he's going to be a great safety for us. Bell can play safety at this level but he'd be much better at CB in our defense.

They said the same about Jason Allen coming out of HS (Muscle Shoals, AL---AA RB & Gatorade Player of the Yr, recruited as an athlete) he made the transition as a Vol (playing both CB & S) and he now makes a living at CB in the league w/ the Texans. JRM is similar to JA in measurables, athleticism, and speed. Like JA, I like JRM's versatility---he can be moved around in the secondary at CB, S, and/or Star and be successful. IMO

Bell
Camp Stats, 247, and ESPN have VB 5'11-6' 190 which is good measurables for S or CB.

I agree, think he'd be productive at the Star position as well.

JRM
Sure he can play CB. But as I said in my response to JC like his versatility---CB, S, and/or Star position.

Allen and JRM are different body types and athletes. Allen was never projected as an OLB at the next level like JRM is/was at times. JRM is really a SS prototype for this system. And that's where he needs to play.

Bell would be a true monster at the Star position in this defense. He would be allowed to play to his strengths which are his instincts and playmaking ability.

True, but recruiting analysts had projected JRM as an OLB in a 4-3, not 3-4 base "D". Tennessee recruited him as an athlete where he'll probably end up at at S and play some Star too. I stated that I would like to see him get a look a CB and compared him to JA due to his size and athleticism but his coverage skills and speed need to improve.

As to their body types---.
JA measurables coming out of HS---6'2" 200, 4.4 /40, Benched 300, w/ a 38" vert.
compared to
JRM 6'1 198, 4.7 / 40, w/ a 29" vert.

RE: V Bell, I like him at S (primarily) and Star

Question is can we land enough talent this year to have a really solid defense next year. I am not being a negative nancy but this is the worst defense in the sec over the past 5 - 6 years. We will not beat many teams lucky to go 6 - 6 and only because our defense is a joke. A solid defense puts us around 9-3 to 10-2 thus year.!
