Current Commits - Defense (10)
DT - Bradley (JUCO)
DE - Carr
LB - Vereen
LB - Zanca
LB - Campbell (JUCO)
LB - Barnes
LB - Goeas
CB - Sutton
S - Miles
S - Reeves-Maybin

What do we need? 2 DL, 1 LB, 2 DB

Who are the top targets?

Defensive Line - The Vols have two D-Linemen committed and are looking to add two more. Toby Johnson is #1 on the D-Line board. He's a high-impact kid that will come in and be in the 2-deep from Day 1. TJ is also versatile and can play NT, DT, and DE. That kind of versatility is something important to Sunseri in his defensive scheme. The Vols are also looking to add the best available HS DE or DT. As of now, Rod Crayton or Keith Bryant are looking like the most likely players to claim the final D-Line spot. There are some concerns with Crayton's foot, but the medical team and trainers are confident they can manage the issue. Crayton's strength is unmatched, and he would be a quality addition to this class. Bryant is currently committed to Miami, but his commitment is on shaky ground and will only get shakier when sanctions are levied against Miami before NSD (hearing most likely in November). At this point, the Vols probably take whoever commits first but seem to prefer Bryant over Crayton. Another name that is losing some steam is Jerrol Mobley, and this is because recruiting is a numbers game. The Vols will likely address the NT position in the JUCO ranks for the foreseeable future.

Linebackers - The Vols have five LBs currently committed and are looking to add at least one more (and will only do so if the coaches get a recruit(s) they covet). The top priority is Carl Lawson and Jason Hatcher. The JACK LB spot is in dire need of high-impact talent and these two would bring it. Other names to look for are Grace, Ngakoue, Levenberry, and Mustafaa. Depending on the success of landing a top LB to the Vols, there also may be attrition to our currently committed LBs.

Defensive Backs - The Vols have three DBs currently committed and are looking to add two more. The DB board looks like this: Vonn Bell, Vonn Bell, Vonn Bell, followed by the rest of the DBs. Bell is an elite recruit with the versatility to play CB or Safety (although he is being slotted in at CB). With JRM and Miles committed, the Vols are satisfied with the safeties. In addition to Bell, look for UT to take the best available DB (regardless of CB or Safety) if there is room. Right now the most likely names are Gray (if he qualifies), Garland (if staff is comfortable with legal issue), White (unlikely), Goodman (very unlikely), or sway a player currently committed elsewhere. Regardless of whether we take a fifth DB, a DB class of Sutton, Bell, Miles, and JRM is quite impressive.

Best-case finish - TJ, Crayton/Bryant, Lawson/Hatcher, Ngakoue/Grace, Bell, Gray

Great post OCI.

Bingo on the high impact LB's especially at jack and also the DB situation.

Question, any chance of shooting for stars and trying to get Montravious Adams on a visit? I would assume the staff has written him off as of now?

are there any juco LB's uncommitted or committed elsewhere we have a shot with? starter potential for next year?

Doesn't look like it. Kenny Flowers from Hutchinson has the best offer list of Juco linebackers, but does not appear that we have any interest.

Barnes? Anyone else they would part ways with? I like all of the other LB commits...

Thanks for the rundown, OCI.

I just hope Sunseri and the rest of the D staff does well enough to get another year on the Hill.

I don't want to flood this thread with this notion, but I just want to get an opinion - do people think Barnes will be the one to "look around?" I wouldn't say I follow the kid closely, but every update 247 has, it doesn't mention anything spectacular about Barnes. He hasn't played football for very long, and he committed out of nowhere. I don't really know how to read it at this point, but I think he's the most likely option. But, out of respect for him, and this board, hopefully no one floods the thread with this debate. I'm just looking for second opinions.

Regardless of how many LBs we have commit from here on out, I doubt we show anyone the door, but I understand the skepticism about Barnes and the line of thinking that he would be the first to look elsewhere.

I've thought about that as well, but as highly as skeeter said Sal thought about him I'm not sure I see him being let go unless we have something like Lawson and Levenberry both wanting to commit.

At this poont the staff has got to look back and say "we fcuked up". When thinking about guys like Khalid Henderson, Imani Cross, Dy'shawn Mobley and then losing two elite LB's in santos and O.Peters right before NSD. This is in the past and there is no use in b!tching over spilled milk, but hopefully they use it as a building block.
Currently the class is mediocre at best in relation to SEC standards, but the VOLs are in play with gamechanging recruits that could make or break this class.

I have not seen Barnes play, but Grayson HS has been a defensive powerhouse for a few years. It may be he is being overshadowed by the nation's #1 recruit at DE. I would not sell him short. If he committed early, maybe he really wants to be a Vol.

The three guys you named would be doing for UT what they are doing for UT right now.

Nice thread. Do you think UT really has a chance with Grace or Yannick? Seems like little discussion for how good they could be for us.

If true, I'm surprised. Not only is Crayton quicker and a great deal stronger than Bryant, he also has been much more productive. I understand that the level of competition in south Florida is significantly tougher than in central Alabama, but Crayton has put up staggering numbers; he literally has averaged 3 times more tackles per game than Bryant (162 in 11 games last year vs. 55 in 10).

IMO, Crayton will be an impact player a year or two sooner than Bryant, and I don't think Bryant will ever match Crayton's ability to be a truly disruptive force.

I do not know for a fact who is preferred, but that is the impression I get.

excellent post. Anyone think C patrick will qualify? Noticed Zanca had 35 tackles and 4 sacks. Was that in one game?!

Henderson - hasn't done anything yet so how is that screwing up?

Cross - Same as Henderson plus we got Hill who is bigger and faster so again not sure where you get your info.

Santos - Flipped as soon as his dream school offered a scholly. How is the world can you blame the coaches on that?

Peters - Went on a visit to Arky with Petrino there......nuff said.

Mobley - Is a great kid and maybe going to be a decent player but not sure he is a Cobbs type player. Can't arguue with the coaches not offering.

Just thought you needed some clarification on you statement that the coaches screwed up on these. :hi:

Imani will be a great back for Nebraska. We definitely messed up there, IMO.
