First off I dont realize what Hamilton sees in Kiffin. The only thing he's proven to me is that he's a great recruiter.I don't want Kiffin nor do I want Butch Davis.First he's old and don't tell me Nick Saban's 57 too, I've heard enough of that. They may be the same age,but Davis' energy level is not even close to Saban's.Second I believe he would be a stepping stone kind of coach and not stay @ UT very long,if approached by an NFL job opening. Now Mike Leach on the other hand would be a fantastic hire.He runs an excellent offensive system, that is fast paced and hard to keep up with. Before getting hired by Texas Tech in 2000,he was Oklahoma's OC.The year before Leach came to Oklahoma their offense was ranked 108th.When Leach arrived their improved vastly to 2nd.He has been with for 8 years so Im pretty sure he would for a very long time if successfull.Last but not least Jon Gruden.I don't even need to evaluate him,he's just that Damn good.

1) Kiffin is young, which is a big thing that they are looking for. They want a coach that can be here 10-15 years.
2) He can recruit, as he has proven at USC. He probably has contacts/pipelines in Southern Cal
3) He orchestrated the 2004-2005 offense at USC. Yes, you could argue that alot of that was the result of the recruits, but you have remember who brought in those recruits? Furthermore, everyone complains about how we don't get the most out of our recruits - well, he did. AND, he did it in a pro-style offense. Everyone here is up in arms about how bad our offense is, but no one wants to move to the spread. He would bring a pro-style offense, and history has shown it was effective. This in turn, helps his recruiting, as recruits who want to go to the NFL generally prefer to play in a pro-style offense.
4) He will most likely put together a very solid staff around him. I know there are alot of rumours about Monte Kiffin, and that is probably a pipe dream. If that happens, great. But even if it doesn't, Kiffin still has alot of ties to coordinators and assistants from his days at USC as well as his time in the NFL (not to mention any ties through his father). I have heard Orgeron's name thrown around as having a tie with the Kiffins as well. In addition to being a great recruiter, Orgeron is a pretty good DL coach, which is an area we have been lacking lately.

His resume, IMO, is the best suited for UT. He is young, energetic, and can recruit nationally. He will run a pro-style offense, and he will run it well. He will most likely bring a solid staff of good recruiters as well as strong coaches.

I know he's young and all that crap, but aside form that he's proved nothing as a Head Coach. If you want a young energetic coach that I know will stay @ Tennessee and runs an excellent offense mixed with tons of trick plays then let me introduce you to Chris Petersen.I would take him over Kiffin any day.

Chris Petersen is basically Bobby Petrino. They took a program that their predecessor improved, and once they were at a higher level than all the bad teams they played against, just took it one more step.

I hope when Hamilton hires a coach, he looks for someone who can make the quick turnaround as opposed to someone who can take the success of someone else and maybe go a step further. If you want someone because he can beat the bad teams around him, at least go for Patterson, because he has been doing it for long enough that I would feel more confident about UT hiring him, and he does more than hold his own against the good teams TCU plays occasionally.

Another thing I would look for in a coach is someone who consistently wins games against better teams. I'm not sold on Leach, but I'm not terrified of him because he has beaten Texas and Oklahoma multiple times.

I understand he inherited a good team, but Hawkins' leftovers are gone except for Ian Johnson.Yet Petersen still reigns surpreme. He is also said to be a very solid recruiter and has brought in some great talent to Boise.

I think John L Smith's recruits were gone when Petrino was finishing up. Still doesn't mean anything.

how does it not,HE'S still having success with players HE recruited.
Because once it is established that your team is superior to all the crap that it plays in the regular season, it isn't nearly as hard to get guys to keep it at that level.

He still proved that he can beat a quality team Oklahoma and Oregon.

What happened when Boise State went into Athens? Peterson was the OC at the time.

When Meyer brought his Spread option/single wing, whatever you want to call it (I have heard it called many things ,and I think it is probably a hybrid of all of them) to Florida, alot of people were skeptical. However, he has the instate recruits to run the system, as all you really need is speed.

I don't know if Tennessee would be able to recruit enough speed ALL OVER the field to run such a system. In a pro-style offense, you don't have to have speed at every position.

Kiffin would be a joke.......remember the name of another former Oakland HC who went the college route...Callihan @ Nebraska. That went well. As for Kiffin being the OC for USC serving as some sort of qualification for the UT job, with that talent @ USC, I could have looked like a genious. Besides, the offense he ran was that of Norm Chow w/ minimal modifications. If there is no college HC'ing experience on the resume, please do not apply!

So I understand you right. If one has coached the Oakland Raiders, he cannot succeed at the college level because Callahan didn't?

Do I have that right?
