ESPN Titletown (merged)

Williamsport, PA is a joke. Those kids are the best in "Little League" sanctioned baseball. There are other types of baseball leagues besides "Little League". Pony, AAU, Legion, Cal Ripken, etc. all act as leagues that are affiliated by towns just like LL.

Thinking that these kids are the cream of the crop in the entire US is ridiclious. In my experiences kids that are good enough will play on AAU teams rather than their LL All-Star teams.

....but you know ESPN broadcasts that each year so there's absolutley no reason to get to the truth of it all.

Just seen the advertisement on ESPN. All thanks to the Ladies. Come on guys. Bball has a good chance in next couple years to add. Football not so much.

for what it's worth businees, I noticed Kingsport was listed as a nominee for Title town and even though DB may be good at everything, they don't win too many championships, so I'm assuming it was listed solely for the ABSURD amount of AAU tournaments the city is able to pull in all kinds of sports ranging from basketball, baseball, soccer, softball and tennis.

For every Williamsport, PA where there is one championship won a year, there is Memphis. Home of the Tennessee Spring Fling. How many Championships are won there as opposed to Williamsport. I'm not saying Memphis should be it but Williamsport, coming from a baseball Point of View, doesn't offer the best of the best in the world. It offers the best with in a League.

To compare it's like going and watching the Big12 Championship game and saying, "Hey here's the best of the best when it comes to College Football, bar none"

I'm just saying putting Williamport in there is just obviously stroking the ESPN Machine.

Bill, I can understand having that many AAU Championships being won but one Championship annually with that Championship possibly not being the best in the world doesn't strike me as "Title Town".

well first off Spring Fling is now in Murfreesboro where it should be. I always thought it was unfair for E. Tennessee schools to have to drive to Memphis for HS championships.

Anyways, back to Williamsport. Obviously ESPN has nurtured it a lot more than any other baseball division, but Little League is the biggest youth baseball organization and clearly the most recognizable. I'm not saying it should be recognized as Title Town, but neither should Knoxville if it's based on number of championships won. I guess right now Boston should have sole claim to title town if titles won are the biggest criteria.

They moved the Spring Fling? When did this happen? I've been away too long.

Eh, it's whatever man I've always hated it when people pump up Little League to be the best of the best, when it's absolutley not.

To tell you the truth more kids these days are going to AAU because of the obvious higher class of talent. I don't care who you are in the Little League regular season everyone had that kid who would throw up their glove and catch it during the game.

In AAU, travel ball, etc. you don't get that. If I had a son and he was good at baseball, and I thought he had some kind of future in it then he'd be playing AAU/ Travel. I wouldn't even mess with City League ball.

I fully understand where you are coming from. I will say that a few years ago when I was still helping at the ballparks and from what I gather from some friends little brothers' baseball endeavors currently, most travel teams in this area will work their schedule around Little League and Babe Ruth seasons. I agree that the best of the best are playing travel ball. It was the same in tennis and is the same in basketball, but it can't be denied how much more well known Little League is than travel ball, AAU ball, Ripken League or even Babe Ruth league.

The current title town has to be Boston. Six major sports titles in like 7 years? C'mon.

i think we can win this thing seeing as we'll be huge underdogs going in...

I heard Sevier County may win. Jon Gruden owns property there. You're right his wife being a former UT cheerleader puts us in the underdog role.

If we can get John Pennington to write an article about how Knoxville has lost it's zest we'll win without a doubt.

The fling was born in Chattanooga. Murfreesboro does a fine job, but Scenic City is its home..

If you forgot, the massive Green Monster in Right field will remind you at Engel Stadium.

Engel Stadium

I never knew Babe Ruth and Lou Gerigh played there until recently. We scrimmaged Tennessee Temple there a couple years. Lots of history in this place and trust me none of it is due to Tennessee Temple.

this is true because the entire network and all of the anchors and analysts are a bunch of liberal yankees. i really wish that there was another major sports network not based in the north.

I'm pretty sure the Fox Sports outfit is based out of LA.

Rece Davis is an Alabama graduate.
Kenny Maine is from the Northwest.
John Anderson is a Cheesehead.
Neil Everett is also from the Northwest.
Stuart Scott is a Tarheel.
Scott Van Pelt is from DC.

While a large part of TV personalities are form the Northeast some are from other regions.

After checking alot of them out ESPN does a lot of hiring from the Northwest and Pennsylvania, besides the New Jersey, New England, New York area.

Chattanooga was Spring Fling home during my high school days, with some stuff, notably football and basketball in Murfreesboro. Being an upper East Tennessean, I had no problems with Chattanooga hosting. But just as I consider it unfair for Memphis to host it since the Tri Cities and Knoxville are so far way, it's equally unfair to Memphis, Jackson, Martin, Dyersburg and the like to have to drive all the way to Chattanooga.

I have read over the years that this league is really one of the weakest in the states. Dizzy Dean is strong and besides that your select teams that play in "show case tournaments" are where the best players are at ....

The Tennessee Volunteer football program has 47 bowl appearances (second among all schools), won six National Championships and has the highest winning percentage of any team in major college football

Huh?

As college sports go, and assuming we are basing it only on major sports programs, I don't see how Gainesville doesn't get it.

As professional sprts go, isn't it Boston?
