Team of the week: Tennessee

Coach Kellie Harper and the No. 25 Lady Vols aren't into moral victories, but it does matter how well they played in their 67-61 loss to UConn on Thursday. They made it an entertaining and exciting game. And with both coaches expressing an interest in extending the series, the rivalry got a little spark from this game that it didn't quite get last year when the Huskies won 60-45 in Hartford.

But how Tennessee responded to the loss was also important. The Lady Vols shut down No. 12 Kentucky 70-53 on Sunday as Harper coached against former Tennessee teammate Kyra Elzy.

Tennessee senior Rennia Davis had 15 points and 20 rebounds, joining Glory Johnson as the only Lady Vols players in the last 20 years to hit the 20-rebound mark. It has happened 12 times overall in Tennessee history.

Just looking ahead at the schedule, we have a killer stretch coming up in early Feb at Miss St, at Ky, then So Car. But thanks to covid and Vandy, we have a full week off btw State and Ky, then again before So Car. at home. No Sunday games in that stretch. I know that could change, but if it holds, it truly means the bball gods are on our side. A week to prepare and to rest legs. At this point in the season, that's way more valuable than any loss of game sharpness from not playing. Would love to be the ESPN team of that week.

We win 2 of those 3 and we're on a rocket into the tourneys.

The game against UCONN and Kentucky shows that as a team we heading in the right direction in a piecemeal and deliberate manner. Success over the next three games would go a long way to validate and solidify our current ranking. After UCONN and Kentucky we have to prove that we can sustain success consistently from game to game. First, trust the process, now master the process. Very quietly, the Lady Vols are becoming a very dangerous team.

I was wrong. I though A&M could play us the 14th of Feb but they already have Arky that day. No idea when we’re gonna fit that game back in.
