To be fair, Lawrence slightly outperformed Manning in just about every metric in college. I see nothing to be upset with here. Peyton/Weinke as honorable mention behind Lawrence sounds right to me.

I wonder why a quarterback in the late 2010s had better numbers than a quarterback in the 90s. Numbers don’t always paint the whole picture.

There's 18 yards of difference between the 2011 and 2020 season for passing yards/per in NCAA. Trevor was just a bit better at everything on paper. Trevor had 90 ads and 17 int's w/ completion rate of 66.6% (164.3 passer rating). Peyton had 89 td's and 33 int's with 62.5% completion rate (147.1 passer rating). Peyton did have 1,100 more yards passing, but played 5 more games, as well. There's very little difference in 2011 passing vs 2020 passing. It's ok to admit Trevor was better because he was.

Might be that Tennessee made a bit too much noise about Peyton as a Heisman candidate. ESPN figure we needed a bit of humbling.

Meh, it was a different game in 1997. Fulmer would have preferred 3 yards and a cloud of dust
, but having a QB of PFMs ability (and Shuler before him) changed the equation.

Speaking of Heath, as most long time readers of this board know-I was in the proverbial "belly of the beast" of Dawg land during that period. I can assure you-the puppies were 10x more afraid of those Shuler teams than they ever were of one QB'ed by Manning. During UT/UGA weeks for a couple of years there the AJC was filled with beat writers moaning about how they had little hope of stopping Shuler. Always thought that was odd for some reason. Oh well, thank you for reading the ramblings of an old man lol.

Between 2011 and 2020, now do 1997 and 2020. It was a much different game. The way they called penalties, the plays called. It’s all different

I know it's a joke, but the truth is, ESPN doesn't much care for Vol Fans. We're loud, we're knowledgeable, and we're opinionated. They don't much care for that. They'll give us rankings--they kind of have to; but when it comes to opinion pieces and their subjective rankings, forget about it. Peyton, one of the greatest QB's in NFL history, is behind a guy who has done NOTHING . Could make a great shampoo commercial, tho.

Eddie George would not have won the Heisman if he lost to Florida, apparently. That’s really the only unforgivable loss..

Luckily, Tennessee is blessed with many astute fans who are well versed in the hidden rules of the Heisman campaign.

Agree, the FL losses gave ESPN all the ammo they needed to campaign against him for the Heisman. It was a cheap shot for sure.

However Peyton's FB success, popularity and bank account has not suffered from it so he still wins.

Right. And the narrative has become “0-4” even though he didn’t start the ‘94 game, came in with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter when the score was already 24-0 and played 15 snaps. That loss is definitely “on him”….

Then he came back in ‘95 and went 23-36 for 326 yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs. But then he gave up 62 points on defense…

Those FL teams were absolute crap despite finishing in the top 5 every year with a NC to boot! Manning was such a Schlub!
