ESPN's secret hate list revealed!
Spoiler: ESPN hates every team.
Uh, I’m sorry, but Woodson was a great player. He’s in the college and pro football hall of fame. One of the best defensive backs of all time. He’s not Peyton Manning, but he was an exceptional player.
1997 wasn't Manning's best year in collegeIMHO, he was a much better pro than college player. Part of his 'greatness' in college relates back to the Heisman he was handed. It becomes circular, a bit.
I'm not saying Woodson wasn't a great pro and a very, very good college player. He simply wasn't the beast in 1997. Manning was. ESPN decided otherwise.
Reasonable minds can differ on this point.
The persecution fetish extends beyond politics and religion, I see. Good for you. I hope you're having a wonderful time! No, the northeastern yankees of espn have hated us at least as far back as when we hurt their feelings by beating Syracuse in 98. Feuds before and since with Penn State, Michigan and Lady Vols vs UConn also contributed. Then us rejecting their boy Schiano ... who do those trailer park hillbillies think they are!
He had a couple of stinker games in 1997. Great stats don't account for situational play and timeliness. Having bad games against an outmatched Florida team and then Vanderbilt in the last regular season game kept him from winning the Heisman in a landslideDepends on how you judge "best". 1997 was his 1st or 2nd best statistical category in everything except Completion % (4th) and Interceptions (3rd). Of the 14 categories, 1997 was his best in 8 of them, 2nd in 4.
What year do you think he didn't have any stinker games? He had a couple of stinker games in 1997. Great stats don't account for situational play and timeliness. Good post.Uh, I’m sorry, but Woodson was a great player. He’s in the college and pro football hall of fame. One of the best defensive backs of all time. He’s not Peyton Manning, but he was an exceptional player.
Good post.
I have no idea why ESPN campaigned for Woodson, but I don't think they did it out of malice towards UT or Manning. It still bothers me because it affected Manning, though.
Admittedly, the Heisman has always been more of a subjective award than an objective award. The fact that there was no modern precedent at the time for defensive players in Heisman voting is what bothers me about ESPN's campaigning.
Why didn't ESPN campaign for Champ Bailey in 98 if they had an objective reason to campaign for Woodson in 97?
ESPN doesn't hate us. We were just collateral damage. That's reason enough for us to hate them.
