Michigan is in position to finish #1 in the nation, and they are #1 in the nation in July. That whole notion about how you finish is crap, because in order to win, you have to be landing the big dogs, no matter the date on the calendar, and we haven't been doing that.
I agree with you to some level, but you don't HAVE to be at or near the top to finish at or near the top. On Rivals, Clemson is currently ranked #22, basically because of Nkemdiche. If they lost just him, they would drop ten spots. If they lost him and their second best current commit, they would drop to #48, just below Northwestern.
Meanwhile, if you take us as an example, first of all Rivals still has three commits of ours unrated, Barnes, Kendrick, and Smith. I took the liberty of giving them 5.5 3*'s each. I figure they'll average at least that good of a rating. Then, if you add Vonn Bell, Derrick Green, and Reeve Koehler, it moves us from #25 up to #12, with still plenty of room to make more solid additions to keep moving up.
Not saying we get all three of those guys, but we're high on their list right now, in addition to several other highly rated guys. I think this year we could certainly prove your concept wrong, as it seems several recruits are waiting to see if they can finally see the results on the field and come to a winning program again.
