ESPN loves us?

Thanks, Freak. I haven't read the article yet, but the figures are interesting. The performances of Saban, Swinney, and Smart have all declined in recent years, which I attribute to increased competitiveness. Is the increase in competitiveness due to the newer transfer portal rules, NIL, or a combination of the two?

I love CJH and what he's done here. That being said I don't think he's a better head coach than Kirby. Kirby has out-recruited and out coached him too many times to argue he's better imo. Bowl cut has also been able to accomplish more overall. Heupfully that changes soon, and I will gladly change my view.

I wouldn’t put him that high yet. He may end up there, but Kirby and Dabo have NCs. James Franklin made Vandy relevant briefly although I think under achieves at PSU. I think CJHs record versus top 20 is better than Franklin.

Not to go down that road, but Kirby had a much better head start than Heupel did. I think this season, pretty much 2 months from now, is our best opportunity to beat them in a long time.

I agree there’s no doubt he inherited a better situation. He has also sustained that success for several seasons running without much dropoff. So I am not above giving him some credit.

I completely agree. I think UGA is the best program in the country and they are the only team we can’t beat. For some reason, beyond my Vol bias, I feel like this seasons game could be our 98 Florida game. That doesn’t mean I think we win a National Title, but I don’t think UGA is the same group they were 2-3 years ago.

Agree that Ga isn’t what they were, but I don’t think anyone will be at that sustained level. Well, until this current situation settles down and someone takes control. With the current opportunities it is impossible to build that kind of depth. When you have starting capable guys on your 2 and 3 deep, they are going to make a move to get starting money somewhere else.

The days of the super team are definitely gone. I think retaining guys that are juniors and seniors who might have extra eligibility , who are mid to late round picks is the formula that has gotten Michigan and Ohio State over the finish line the past 2 years. Retaining guys like Jack Sawyer are what really got Ohio State a title more so than Judkins IMO

Idk if I agree with Day being first. Damn near missed playoffs with the best talent in the country. Just not impressed with him. Heupel does a lot with not as much talent but still needs to have another overachieving season and somehow beat Georgia before I would put him that high. He has beat a lot of great coaches and the turnaround has been impressive though

I know some of you will hate this. Kirby should be #1. 2 national championships, in playoffs Ryan Day plays Michigan and ?????????????????????????????
The interesting question here is if Heupel and Kirby were on opposite teams how would they fare? Honestly I think it’s possible Heupel wins a title at Georgia if he’s coach there; also entirely possible Kirby doesn’t win as many games at Tennessee as Heupel does. Both are great coaches imo though. Completely agree with you on Ryan Day.

Ryan Day is the Stetson Bennett of college head coaches. Sure, he can win championships with all the talent around him by not screwing up terribly but he's just not that individually talented. He's lucky to be where he is because elsewhere he'd be just another coach.

We've seen issues with Heupel in time management, play calling, and preparation (particularly for road games.) He's a great coach with a few kinks to work out with his on field coaching, IMO. #2? Perhaps a little high. Top 5, I think so. Coming into the SEC and shaking things up and bringing UT back from the dead quickly is no small feat.

Half their fan base was ready to fire him before the 1st round game last year. I remember hearing things like can't win the big game, can't call plays, defense sucks, etc.

I was really hoping they were right.

I can't disagree. Has any coach in the modern era walked into a dumpster fire like he did and reversed things as well and as quickly?

And FWIW, I would place Bill Snyder number one if all coaches of the past 50 years were included.
