I loved the article on the Vols but .....

ESPN - Schlabach: On (and off) the Mark - College Football
(Off) the Mark
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier led Florida to the 1996 national championship and won six SEC titles as coach of his alma mater. This season, Spurrier sits in the captain's chair of one of the worst collapses in recent SEC history.

Less than a month ago, the Gamecocks were 6-1 and ranked sixth in the country. Now they've lost four games in a row and are in danger of being left out of a bowl game if they don't beat No. 15 Clemson on Nov. 24. If South Carolina doesn't beat the Tigers, it will finish 6-6. It is Spurrier's first four-game losing streak since his first season as a college coach at Duke in 1987.

South Carolina's defense has allowed a whopping 1,188 yards and 99 points in its last two games.

"Whatever we're doing the last couple of weeks hasn't worked very well," Spurrier said. "I'm responsible for the defense. I am the head coach. My style of coaching has really always been run the offense, hire somebody and let him do the defense. You can't run both sides of the ball. But I'm going to try to take more of an active role in watching defensive practice."

Great coaching job Stevie

Sounds like a Coach taking totaly responsibility for his team failures and not chalking it up to excuses (young team, etc...) other than his lack of control or understanding.

For as long as Spurrier's been in football people have know he has nothing to do with the defense, so why would someone call him out on it now?

his honesty is refreshing as usual, but he sure threw his DC under the bus didnt he?

I'll take him at UTK as HC and I don't care one iota if he never even so much as talks to a defensive player.

Last year, I think, during a post game press conference he sent out for a DB coach to answer a question. Pretty much pubically humilated the guy in front of the press.

Even though that wouldn't be my style at least he's throwing grown men getting paid and are monetarily responsible for their work other than amatuer athletes.

Which, actually to be truthful I think college athletes aren't immune to criticism.

That reminds me. I was watching the game through PPV, and when Hefney was the one who was alone against McFadden... I'll be honest... I thought he was going to get run over. But what do you know? Hefney can open-field tackle!

Giving up an SEC record in rushing yds tends to make people ask questions. Seems the HC should have taken an interest in his team's only bright spot.

South Carolina's problems start at Smelley and Mitchell. Spurrier doesn't have a QB that understands his system. Every once in a while Mitchell will catch lightning in a bottle, but will digress with an absolutley stupid mistake.

Mitchell's problem is that he could probably punt it as accurately as he throws it.
