To me it seems that the sweet sixteen is the target for this group. Anything less would certainly be a disappointment. I think were really solid from a perimeter standpoint looks much better than last season. The inside game seems to be lacking we'll see if some of the players that will be playing there are underrated by me. I'm expecting us to score more and be better overall on offense. The defense worries me have to see if any of these players are better than how I view them on the defensive end.
As what has happened in the past it doesn't matter if you score 89 and the other team gets 100 and teams scoring at will was definitely the biggest problem last season.

Fine article but what is else is she going to say, "I hate my new roster!"

I do question this one bit of revisionist history which explained the teams struggles as resulting from this change:

"As a result, she shifted philosophies and her own up-tempo, pressing scheme to try and win a national title."

As I recall, the LVs began the season pressing to the wind and had to adjust at the start of the SEC season to stave off a disaster.

Surely they put the writer on a word-count limit--or they intend to feature the interview video closer to start of the season.

But given the brevity of the article, and noting that those words are the writer's synopsis of whatever CKC told her... maybe it's just not a sentence that holds up to being parsed that finely. Like the word choice "shifted," that's awfully ambiguous. It seems more like a word chosen to beg the question--which would make sense if the interview was filmed for later showing.

Fine parsing are us! Of course, this is only a small sample. Not until we have recorded interview footage can we really begin to interrogate the offender and consequently hold her accountable for her crimes against humanity.

Brand new roster, from various different systems, together for the first time. This could work with proper coaching, but the question is still in the mix. Will she continue with the same system that has failed in the past, or will she submit to a regular type of offense that these players have playing since they started playing basketball? I think there was more talent last year, so will she play the same with these lesser talented players?
That will be the most important question that won’t be determined until the team plays their first exhibition. Good luck to the team.

All about talent and buy in of which this third group being at this time rated as average talent and according to reports 100 percent buy in to the system.

First group was similar and had a fairly good season was always two to five points short on to many games of having a great season.

Second group above average talent no buy in to the system and totally did not put forth the effort to play it as expected.


Unless the current group plays well above their expected talent level. They could be more talented or less just don't know yet. I would say the SEC conference best is 11 or 12 wins and the worst looks like 7 or 8.

With an entirely new team in the early-early stages of workouts, of COURSE the players are going to bust their butts for their coaches and teammates to prove to everyone that they belong. So while they are obviously working so super hard to impress, Kim really does need to continue to be highly complimentary of them. At this stage they all desperately need positive reinforcement, both in private sessions and through public media reports. There will be time later to be hypercritical if that becomes necessary, but not yet. IMO, for the time being there should be nothing but positive encouragement coming out of the coaching staff and close media like Paige Dauer.

I believe last years squad had a higher perceived ceiling, but too much of it was too inexperienced. Maybe this group is less ATHLETIC, but if enough are TEAM oriented gamers then life can be substantially better.

Will not be surprised if some that moved on improve with age and experience and excel, but I BELIEVE buy in to our schemes is critical and did not see a lot of that last year. So yeah, Coach could be thrilled with the early effort and synergy with her 15 new faces and a reporter could see the difference with her interactions with them.

Yep last years team IMO especially some of the freshman had/have a high ceiling but too many with no experience. Everything worked for the 5 at their HS & Travel ball so when they faced taleneted experienced players and roadblocks happened. They allowed one or two players start bringing some negativity gossip to the court probably from their groomers and it snowballed downhill. Getting high rated players to come into a system, with low BB IQ Jrs/Srs players & virtually no upperclass leaders is a recipe for outside noise to take over. In this atmosphere of college ball I would never have more than 2 true freshmen on my team most are not going to finish where they start anyway, learned a lesson in futility.

From some articles I have been reading this is becoming a concern among coaches on how much time and effort do you put into recruiting HS players when you have no guarantee now how long they will stay with you.

Hello, first post here but I have read the VolNation page for some time and have a profile on on3 forums.
I want to give my position on the rosters from year two to year three. Year two roster was not accurately evaluated by recruiting services so that is one issue.
The comparison between the two rosters locally and from a public standpoint are being viewed from the wrong performance measures which is recruiting services.
The top three players Coach Caldwell has landed in her first three seasons at Tennessee in terms of college experience, skill transition, leadership ability, and statistics are Samara Spencer a four year starter in the SEC, Aaliyah Moore a three/two and half year starter in the SEC, and Kaylene Smikle a three and half year starter in the Big 10.
Factually, including the rest of the roster which includes three more players that started in the SEC last season at Georgia, Auburn, and Texas A&M plus the huge increase of high level 3point shooting talent it’s not close to accurate that last years roster has more athletic talent or basketball skills.
Also, Tennessee best post player in the previous years not including Rickea Jackson who is more of a wing was Alexis Dye. Dye came from Troy and absolutely was electric in the SEC as a double double machine. Fatmata Janneh is every bit of that type of player and could explode onto the scene at Tennessee. For the record, she made Texas A&M look better than it ever did to close the season vs when Janiah Barker was there at Texas A&M in the SEC.
When Tennessee played Texas A&M in Knoxville last season, Janneh team won and she posted 17 points and 12 rebounds. Something to think about. Finally, if the players that transferred had more talent and skills they likely would’ve ended up at schools ranked in the Top 5-10 of WBB. None did. Ole Miss and Louisville aren’t better basketball programs than Tennessee. Doesn’t matter about last 10 years before that argument is pursued. Coach Caldwell has her work ahead but she definitely has a better roster to build a team around in year 3. I read this forum plenty so I know what the reaction will be to this post. I just say put factual information in your arguments. I’m here for the 3stripes reveal.

I would guess this group will have the buy in as they know TN is a bigger stage than where they were previously. It remains to be seen if they can handle the competition that comes with that stage.

The roster has players that have started/played at Texas, Georgia, Maryland, Auburn, Texas A&M, Wake Forest, Arizona State, Georgetown, Rutgers, Stanford, Penn State, and Seton Hall. All Power 4 schools. The players that left went to Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Louisville, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, and Rutgers.
Don’t know what point you’re trying to make but if the team the last two years in particular year 1 could perform under the lights at Tennessee then certainly this group can as well. Multiple players are coming from teams that played in the NCAA tourney with them as starters (Georgia, Texas, Maryland) and advanced as far as the Elite 8 and Sweet 16.

This the funniest tweet I’ve seen all year but it’s true. Jada Eads is an incredible talent. And so are several of her new teammates. A fun fact is even before playing college basketball on the Power 4 level a good number of these new LV players were on highly ranked State/National High School teams. Harrisoum Coulibaly, Zhen Craft, Kaylen Smikle among others. Kennedy Flauntleroy played for a National Championship in HS against Janiah Barker team. The film don’t lie. They know how to win and not just play All-American Tik Tok.

I had to do a double take when I read the Lady Vols had someone who played at Arizona State; must've meant Northern Arizona. I'm still annoyed at Molly Miller for stealing one of UNLV's best bigs 2 years ago, then Ruby going there (I wish her well) but still, boo!

Of course I want the LVs to be good, win games, and make it far in the tournament, but my bottom line is fun to watch with good fundamentals. If they get beat by teams that are better quality, so be it....as long as the losses aren't total slaughters.

Go Lady Vols.

You do know Arizona State had a program before that coach took the job right? As I stated Tennessee has a player that played at Arizona State (Flauntleroy). I know the difference between them and Northern Arizona. Also, I know there’s fans somewhere saying the same thing you mentioned about this great UNLV player, and Coach Caldwell bringing in Fatmata Janneh. If she had went to Oklahoma then I’m sure certain TN fans would be screaming about how badly CKC missed out on a quality SEC player. 10 double doubles. I have a feeling Tennessee is going to be able to beat any team they face.

Yes, I am aware that Arizona State is not new to women's basketball. I was a fan of Charlie Turner Thorne and loved it when they played the Lady Vols outdoors in 1999 or 2000. I thought it was clever and gave them a shot at beating the then-dominant Lady Vols.

My complaints about the new coach at Az St were tongue in cheek which I know is difficult to determine from text. The transfer portal take-ith and give-ith. The loss of the UNLV player just stings because she was a great young player that could've led the team to great things. Players come and go, I was lamenting jokingly more than blaming.

I thought Flauntleroy was from Eastern Carolina, I didn't know she was at ASU, I was in no way questioning your knowledge of Arizona schools, I was just going off my working memory.

....Go Lady Vols....wherever they came from. :)

Speaking of Kennedy Flauntleroy who played a season at Arizona State and was freshman of the year in the Big East at Georgetown she led her team to the National Championship game in HS. Has had about four coaching changes during her college career which I’m sure has impacted the transfer decisions.

She plays a lot like Samara Spencer. Is definitely a playmaker and a fit to this system. Jada Eads and Kennedy Flauntleroy are the reasons I never even pay attention to HS rankings. This is not a knock on Barker but I’ll use this game as an example to make my point. You take players that were ranked in the same class in the Top 5 (#2 Janiah Barker) in this same game and she didn’t play anywhere near as good as Flauntleroy won the Maryland MaxPreps Player of the Year award but ranked #85. You tell me from this clip how is this the #85 best player in the class that year? CKC honestly probably got lucky as you could be as a head coach in such a dire situation to recruit the level of talent and Power 4 transfers she did after this past season but she definitely hit the jackpot in the portal. I’m ready to watch them play in FCC @TBA.
