So, Berry played some QB in high school. As it stands now, he's one of the few players on the team who really seems to be putting forth an effort (along with Jones, Creer, etc). He's quick, agile, confident, and he has the respect of his team. He also seem to be able to adapt well to situations when they arise on the field.

We need a change-something that will help us make a complete 180. While we're stuck with our current coaching staff for at least the rest of the season, there are still things we can do to maximize our potential

So....

Do you think Eric Berry would be a good candidate to replace Crompton?

I know we have other QBs, but I'm just curious.

How on Earth can you say one way or the other when you've never seen him take a snap?

i answered yes without reading your thread. i only read the poll title. and ANYONE would make a better replacement. anyone on our team that has ever played QB would be a better quarterback than crompton

Anyone would be better than who we have in the position now. That would also mean that you could keep Berry where he is since anyone you put at QB would be better than where we are now.

That's why I said "do you think"....

I also gave evidence as to why I've considered it.

Also, Crompton is horrible...could it get any worse?

you have to look at teams like miami in the pros who have a WAAAAAYYY more complex pro offense than we do. granted, it never worked in the past, but they said screw it and put brown in at qb to spread the field and offer some play changes. i don't see why we don't put jones in at qb with foster and hardesty or creer and just let them play football. obviously our offense is not clicking at all and letting the players just play football would not be a bad call. even let berry in on the action.

Yea, I tossed around Jones too. Both great players.

The better (or at least more entertaining to image) question: would Crompton make a better free safety?

At 1-3, its time to find ways to get the offense rolling. Imagine a form of the wildhog with Jones at QB, Hardesty/Creer at TB, and Eric Berry as the slot.

Just to clarify, I think pretty much all the players are "putting forth the effort", but the problem is that poor old Jonathan, while he is trying very hard, just does not have what it takes, at least at this point, to get the job done in the SEC. I admire his ability to deliver a lick on a DB and to block downfield like he did yesterday, but while his effort is there, he is obviously lacking in some critical areas.

Beery needs to stay back in the DB area, we need him there more. I know some are saying what about Jones. If I'm a DC and I see Jones line up at QB, I'll stack all 11 players up and dare you to throw. Besides he's not in the game to do anything but run aand defenses know it. Might as well go with the "Wishbone". How many times the "G" has been ran and how many passes?

We have some good WR's and a solid TE in Warren. Get both Stephens and BJ playing time this game and put those playmakers to use. Put Jones in some wingback position in motion and stop these QB draws.

It couldn't get worse right now than it already is

Berry has not trained at all for the QB position (to my knowledge). He most likely doesn't know anything about the offense side of the ball (i.e. playbook, positions, timing, etc)

It takes a lot more than just throwing a super talented guy behind center and saying, "Do something."

I agree with you. But watching JC play I can't help but wonder if a super talented guy with less "prep" would do better than one with a propensity to hit the water boy on a deep route.

Yea, I totally understand that. I kind of would like the fact that he hasn't been Fulmerized as a QB yet. I mean, when I think about it I see the coaches calling out play X (that has no chance in heck of working) and b/c Berry (being untrained in the QB ways) changes it up for some reason-either he forgets the play or whatever. The result would be something no one expected. And who knows, it might turn out to be good.

It'd be one thing if Berry hadn't been trained at all, but he has-he's on the team, he sees it work every day. By no means am I saying his observations would be as valuable as having experience under his belt, but I think right now the only experience anyone has is tainted by poor coaching. Lack of coaching may be a good thing.

Good points by all. I agree that just about anyone might play better than JC right now.

I'd give Stephens or Jones a chance before Berry, though. He's just to valuable on D right now.

I'd thought over both Stephens and Jones. I can't say why exactly I picked Berry.

I think it may partially be because I've seen him around and I have a class with him. He seems to command respect in a non-demanding way...meaning people just seem to like and follow him. Maybe that's what set him apart in my mind from the other stars on the team.

Gerald Jones or Nick Stephens would be a better choice. From what I've read Stephens even has a stronger arm then Crompton.
