Eric Berry vs. Malcolm Jenkins

Uh, who was close to him?

Vontae really wasn't that great of a corner. He was solid, but nowhere near being a top CB.

He's going to be drafted highly because he's a workout wonder, just like his brother Vernon.

Not true at all...the combine greatly helped Vernon while it hurt Vontae. He was a really good corner in college; he just played at Illinois. Maclin had 2 catches for 43 yards on him last year, and followed that up with 4 for 31 this year in a game where Missouri scored 52 points. Robiskie had 2 catches for 9 yards this year and 4 for 31 last year. USC was up by a lot and ended up running the ball in that Rose Bowl, but Patrick Turner didn't even have a catch. Davis was good in college. And another good one was Alphonso Smith from Wake.

How did the combine hurt Vontae?
2nd best 40, most bench reps, 6th best 3 cone, 5th best 20 yard shuttle among the CBs.

And he was good in college, but he just wasn't close to Jenkins really.

Alphonso Smith was great though. I'd put him at 2nd best CB. I just can't put anyone near Jenkins after the past couple years. He basically cut off half of the field on every pass play. He was even solid in run support.

Jenkins was the best man to man corner in the country, and wasn't quite as great at zone coverage.
Vontae was a beast in zone coverage though. That was his strong point. He wasn't as good at man coverage, but he was solid, especially in press coverage.

Vontae may have more upside for the NFL though, but I don't think that his college career was near as good as Malcolms.

I think people expected better than a 4.49, even if it was the best among the CBs. Todd McShay also said, "Right or wrong, people are going to compare Vontae to his older brother, so he has to show teams he's willing to work at the game and not rely on his raw talent, which he failed to do Tuesday." I really have no idea what that means though. Maybe he failed to impress in the position-specific drills; I'm not sure. But there isn't the same kind of buzz that there was with Vernon. Vontae's combine workout is definitely much less of a factor in his draft position than Vernon's was.

I agree with most of the other things you said though. I just think Smith was good enough to make it so that it wasn't "far and away."

I've heard from some fans up North that his work ethic isn't the greatest either. I think someone told me he got benched earlier in the year for skipping practice a few days or something.

But I can agree with that. Like, I don't think it hurt him, I think it actually helped just a little bit, just not on the same level as Vernon.

And yeah, I guess Smith does make it a little closer, but idk. Jenkins still stands out the most by a pretty decent margin IMO. I probably would have gave the award to Jenkins too, because a lockdown corner is a lot harder to find than a playmaking safety.

I can only think of one CB now who could end up being as good as Malcolm has been and it's probably Janoris Jenkins. I don't think I've ever seen a freshman CB play as well as he has.

I personally think both are good players but Berry was clearly the best DB in the nation. His impact in games was felt more than Jenkins. People tuned in to see what Berry would do this week. If he wasn't laying a guy out he was picking off someone. And for what it's worth Bama fans even have told me they like watching Berry. Both are good but Berry dominates in the best conference in America.

They both impacted games just in different ways. Malcolm cut off half the field, and teams were scared to throw to his side so he had less opportunities which means he didn't get shown as much as berry did. Berry being a safety helped over the top which made for more opportunities. He is still a great player so i can't argue for or against one personally, but he is definitely the front-runner for next year.

No disrespect to Jenkins but I think if Berry played in the Big Ten it would have been a landslide. He would have been an even bigger force against the competition up there. I also don't know if Jenkins would dominate down here.
